AKSHUN asks:How much would YOU pay? For Immediate Release: December 12, 1999 Contact akshun@geek.com 1-310-398-7874 On Oct. 15, 1999, the infamous CalArts collective, AKSHUN, commissioned our student loans as venture capital and put the institution's main gallery up for sale on popular Internet auction house, ebay. (http://www.calarts.edu/~nudell/archive/archive.html) The main gallery's previously unsatisfactory market value, which reflected low public exposure and limited returns, underscored the need for radical reassessment. The gallery was fervently bid upon from groups around the world as varied as porn producer Medusaxxx and renowned French biotechnologist known as "jecca." The controversial auction and the resulting media attention, including headline coverage in Wired News (http://www.wired.com/news/politics/0,1283,32070,00.html) improved cost structure, productivity and profitability. Bidding started at $5 and after 52 bids sold for $565.55 to Alan Bukoff of Fluxus Midwest. The vendor contract between AKSHUN and Bukoff and the subsequent reselling of the square footage of the space (http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=211071513) increased overall distribution and maximized AKSHUN visibility and market appeal. AKSHUN is pleased to host highest bidder, Alan Bukoff's "KLONDIKE: International Fluxus Group Show." (http://www.nutscape.com/klondike) The enormous, auctioned gallery space is available for public viewing from December 12 - December 18 in the Main Gallery of CalArts. Akshun and special guest Alexei Shulgin will celebrate this groundbreaking event on Thursday December 16 from 9 PM until 1 AM with champagne, caviar, and other assorted delights. The internationally renowned 386 DX cyberpunk band was flown in direct from Moscow to celebrate the new market trend established by AKSHUN and now taking hold throughout the industry.
