<nettime> South Africa - free the TRC ! |
Regarding the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (South Africa) - "... a commission is a necessary exercise to enable South Africans to come to terms with their past on a morally accepted basis and to advance the cause of reconciliation." Mr Dullah Omar, Minister of Justice Truth Commission webmaster Steve Crawford has started a petition to stop Juta publishers making a killing out of the TRC. Juta are trying to flog the printed version of the report for R 750 (~$124), a CD-Rom version, produced by Jutastat, for R 750 and a one-year internet subscription for ...... R750. And this is "the report that today becomes the property of our nation". The M&G reports today that one of the first petitioners to sign summed up the issue: "The TRC report is the collective memory of a nation. It is part of history and history means nothing if it is not accessible to all. There is no price to history and selective memory - which the TRC fought against - is to be fought against in every possible way. Charging R750 is encouraging selective memory" Not surprising since the petitioner, Lucie Page, is the wife of communications chief Jay Naidoo.
