* Introduction *

Dear Syndicalists,

re-surfacing after the holidays, this Newsletter is relatively slim and
contains mainly some announcements for upcoming events. I know that several
people are cooking up things at the moment and I guess that by the end of
January we will have fuller diaries and the 'Vorfreude' of 'going to meet
soon'.

I would particularly like to remind you of the deadlines for three events
taking place in April: proposals for 'our' LEAF97 meeting in Liverpool
should be in by 10 January, contributions to the Virtual World Orchestra in
Glasgow must get there by 20 January, and the deadline for the
international WRO97 festival in Wroclaw/Poland (April-May) is 1 February.

Please, continue using the list syndicate@aec.at for posting info that is
of interest to the media art community in East and West Europe. (Can
anybody send a short report about, for instance, the symposium at the
Goethe Institut in Prague, and about the video festival in Novi Sad, both
in November.) And again, I would like to ask you all to pass information
that might be interesting for people who don't have e-mail on to those
people. Wealth in information comes from exchanging it freely.

Six weeks on, the struggle of the opposition in Belgrade continues. The
government tries its tricks, but every day the streets are full of people
who demand for Milosevic to admit defeat in the local elections. It must be
difficult to keep up the spirits in weather like this, and over such a long
period, which for me is further proof of the degree of respect that this

* MEDIA IN MEDIA exhibition, Ljubljana/SI

Media in Media is an exhibition project which will present artistic
concepts focusing on mass media, their function, psycho-social and
ideological effects, and aesthetic qualities: video, ambient installation,
photography, avant-garde (experimental) film and the Internet.

* Virtual World Orchestra, Glasgow/Scotland
4 - 6 April, 1997

The NVA Organization in Scotland will premiere Virtual World Orchestra,
an international interactive Internet event in Glasgow,  April 4/5/6, 1997.
VWO will combine live artists and musicians with on-line participants
worldwide.  Together, the real and virtual audience will explore texts,
sounds and images to suggest how geography affects the way each of us
sees the world, informs what we have to say, and influences how we create.

* Liverpool East European Electronic Arts Forum /LEAF/
Sunday, April 13 & Monday, April 14, 1997
organised by: Foundation for Art & Creative Technology (FACT),
Liverpool, UK

During the Video Positive festival, to be held in Liverpool & Manchester
from April 11 - May 18, 1997, members of the Syndicate will be gathering
for a meeting with the working theme: 'Virtually Transformed Europe -
Recent East European Revolutions in Society, Culture, Technology, Art'.

LEAF97 will take as a starting point the ISEA98 broad topic of
Revolution and introduce an ISEA context well in advance for ongoing
discussions and debates that could be further explored off- and on-line.
Moreover LEAF97 would eventually aspire to bring the East European
Electronic Arts awareness to ISEA98 agenda.

LEAF97 could elaborate on the metaphor of Revolution and reconsider the
implication of Revolution and technology from a particular East-European
perspective: from the industrial to the technological, from the shifting
political and information territories of the last ten years, to the failure
of the 'information revolution' to address the great divide between the
first and the third world. Thus LEAF 97 will provide an opportunity for
artists, writers, scientists, musicians and philosophers to relate to the
current crucial re-investigation of the histories and philosophies of both
visual and information culture.

LEAF 97 is a continuation of the V2_East Meeting initiative which aims to
foster the understanding of the process of cultural transformation specific
to Eastern Europe and the role of the media art and artists.

* The Fifth International Biennale in Nagoya-ARTEC'97
Notice for the International Open Competition and Exhibition

The Council for the Nagoya Biennale will be organizing The Fifth Interna
tional Biennale in Nagoya-ARTEC'97 from June 6 through July 6,1997 at the
Nagoya City Art Museum and at the Nagoya City Science Museum.
This project has been holding an exhibition in the field of art&technology
on a world wide scale biannually since 1989. This year, being the fifth
exhibition, it will be composed by 3 parts; 'Theme Exhibition' ,
'International Open Competition and Exhibition' , and also 'International
Symposium' . At the time, we are accepting applications for the
International Open Competition and Exhibition.

THE EIGHTH INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON ELECTRONIC ART

Organized by the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in conjunction with
the Inter-Society for the Electronic Arts.

and complete information on this important international event.  Calls for
papers and exhibitions, a short schedule, and discussion groups to develop
topics for small-group panel sessions  to be held during the conference can
also be found on the website.  The site allows easy registration for ISEA97

* General Info *

V2_East is an initiative of V2_Organisation Rotterdam, which is aimed at
creating a network of people and institutions who are involved with or
interested in media art in Eastern Europe and which wants to create an
infrastructure that facilitates cooperations between partners in East and
West. With its 'Syndicate' mailing list, website <http://www.v2.nl/east>
and regular meetings, V2_East is becoming an important tool for fostering
ties within the media art community in Europe which makes it increasingly
obsolete to think in term of 'East' and 'West', and which will eventually
make the V2_East initiative itself redundant.

The V2_East/Syndicate is a no-budget network initiative rather than an
institution. <syndicate@AEC.at> is the address of a mailing list which is
dedicated to an exchange of information and ideas relating to the situation
and future development of electronic and media art in Eastern Europe. The
list members include more than 80 artists, curators, networkers, writers,
festival organisers, etc., from East as well as West European countries and
beyond, who, through the 'Syndicate', are trying to improve the
communication and cooperation between artists and organisations in East and
West. The list was first installed following the initial meeting of the
V2_East initiative at V2_Organisation in Rotterdam on January 21, 1996, at
the end of the second Next 5 Minutes conference. During the DEAF96 festival
in September, we held a V2_East Meeting in which around 30 people from 12
different countries participated.
