Dushanbe Art Ground Presents:

TOWARD AGITATION.  A live performance of improvised electronic music to a
two-channel 16mm film projection by John Davis - San Francisco, USA

Through Expanded Cinema practice, media artist John Davis (San Francisco,
USA) re-presents archival film material to an original sound work
encouraging an alternative read on the original film material. Following
his participation as a visiting artist/lecturer and tutor for the Dushanbe
Art Ground's Film Workshop in Tajikistan, Davis presents this live score of
improvised electronic music to a two-channel projection of Soviet-era 16mm
films. The performance will include sound sources from various field
recordings Davis obtained while in Dushanbe, as well as sound material from
the films themselves. Davis will create sounds with, and processes the
recorded material through an analogue modular synthesizer he brought with
him to Tajikistan specifically for the performance, enabling him to both
reference his immediate environment, while at the same time, present a new
musical work. Performed at Dushanbe Art Ground's current home, a former
Socialist shopping mall, the environment, in addition to the film material,
provides an additional read on the transitional aspects of the post-Soviet
reality.

Bio: John Davis is a media artist whose current work builds on the
transcendental qualities of experimental film, while expanding the
relationship between moving image and sound through live performance,
collaboration, experimentation and improvisation. John is a current Fellow
and AIR at the Kala Art Institute in Berkeley, California. Recent works
include soundtracks to four films by American avant-garde pioneer Lawrence
Jordan, as well as published music releases on the Root Strata, Digitalis,
Peasant Magik and Students of Decay labels. John's work exhibits worldwide,
notably at the San Francisco Soundwave Biennial, The San Francisco
Cinematheque, The San Francisco Electronic Music Festival, Transmediale,
The Impakt festival and Videoex. His archival footage film "Mark You Make
Believe My Dear, Yes" was included in the San Francisco Museum of Modern
Art's Long Play: Bruce Conner and the Singles Collection in 2010, and his
video "Between Subjects" was featured in a collection of highlights marking
the 20th anniversary of the Freewaves Biennial of Experimental Video and
Art at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art.

John Davis was part of artists-in-residence program developed by Dushanbe
Art Ground. This performance and research was kindly supported by Open
Society Institute - Assistance Foundation in Tajikistan trough "Art and
Society: Education, creativity, engagement and collectivity" project.
