concerning war

Undercurrents / On Rhetoric (language and new warfare)
A series of weekly lectures, conversations, and workshops by artists and theorists on the underlying forces
behind the current state of warfare. Undercurrents is part of Concerning War, a multi-faceted project on the
issue of how war is reflected upon in contemporary artistic practice.

3 December 2005 at 16.00 hrs at BAK, basis voor actuele kunst with:
Ayreen Anastas, artist, New York/Bethlehem
Bregje van Eekelen, cultural theoretician, Amsterdam,
and Rene Gabri, artist, New York/Tehran

In times of war, language is a powerful tool. Terminologies or interpretations regarding the presentation of war
and political conflicts are often imposed and legitimized by dominant powers. Theoretician Bregje van Eekelen
and artists Ayreen Anastas and Rene Gabri critically look at the language currently associated with war through
the lens of their practice. Against the regulative and exclusive politics of rhetoric, the invited artists and
intellectuals attempt to revive the nuances of language, its banished or hidden meanings, shed light on its
complex connotations, and revealing strategies of manipulation.

Entrance fee: 3 euro, Language: English
Reservation is required.
A limited number of visitors are welcome to join participants for a light meal following the talk; early reservation
