Es handelt sich um einen Dokumentarfilm über fünf alternative Architekturprojekte in den USA, die miteinander verbindet, dass sie alle auf "utopische Tendenzen" in den 1960er/1970er Jahren zurückgehen. Was die einzelnen Projekte für uns interessant macht, ist einerseits die innovative Verwendung von Baumaterialen ("Zivilisationsabfälle" wie Autoreifen z.B.) und andererseits, dass an jedem der besuchten Orte ein bestimmtes Gesellschaftsmodell verwirklicht wurde, dessen gebaute Formen mit bestimmten Lebensformen korrespondieren, für die wir den zusammenfassenden Titel "Counter-Communities" gewählt haben. Unser Ziel war es, sowohl den heutigen Zustand, als auch die Geschichte der Projekte darzustellen und zu zeigen, in welche Richtung sich die "utopischen" Ausgangsimpulse jeweils entwickelt haben. In einem Fall, dem "Dome-Village", einer Obdachlosensiedlung in Downtown Los Angeles, haben wir uns entschieden, das Projekt mit in die Auswahl aufzunehmen, obwohl es erst seit wenigen Jahren besteht. Die Verbindung zu den avantgardistischen Architekturströmungen der 1960er Jahre ist dadurch gegeben, dass die Verwendung von "Buckminster-Fuller-Kuppeln" für die Wohnbauten zur dauerhaften Akzeptanz wesentlich beigetragen hat.

The project consists of a documentary film on five alternative architecture projects in the USA that all share common origins in 'Utopian tendencies' of the 1960s/70s. What interests us in the individual projects is the innovative use of building materials (byproducts of our society, such as car tyres, for example) and the fact that a specific social model has been realised in each of the sites visited. The built manifestation of these models corresponds to a particular lifestyle, for which we have chosen the title Counter-Communities. Our aim was to illustrate the current state and the history of these five projects, showing which direction the original 'idealistic' impulses have developed. In one case, that of Dome Village which provides accommodation for the homeless in Downtown Los Angeles, we decided to include the project in our selection even though it has only existed for a few years. An essential factor in this decision was that the use of Buckminster-Fuller's domes for the dwellings has contributed significantly to a lasting acceptance of the project.
