[Nettime-ro] Fw: Call for proposals for the CEU summer university 2003 |
Dear All, Below please find a call for proposals for distribution, and sorry if you received it already. As you probably know, the CEU Summer University holds 1 or 2 courses related to Arts and Culture yearly, that is why I thought of sharing this with you. All my best, Andrea Andrea Csanadi Program Coordinator Arts and Culture Network Program Open Society Institute, Budapest Oktober 6. utca 12. Budapest 1051 Hungary tel.: 36 1 327 3100 / 2401 fax.: 36 1 327 3121 www.batory.org.pl/art CALL FOR PROPOSALS FOR THE CEU SUMMER UNIVERSITY 2003 The Summer University Program (SUN) of the Central European University (CEU) announces a call for course proposals for its summer school held in Budapest, June 30 - August 1, 2003. Program mission 1. The goals of the SUN are the following: * To further the development of higher education in the social sciences and humanities in Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union (CEE/fSU) and other countries of emerging democracies worldwide by promoting continuing education, providing information about current method(ologie)s and research, and by presenting debates and argument on topical issues * To build a network of faculty and professionals which can facilitate the exchange of ideas and co-operative projects * To increase interaction between academics and professionals from the East and the West The Summer University (SUN) of CEU is an outreach program with the aim of promoting academic cooperation and curriculum development among young faculty, researchers, and professionals in the social sciences and humanities in countries of transition worldwide. SUN supplements CEU's core mission of contributing to the development of open societies in emerging democracies by promoting a system of education in which ideas are creatively, critically, and comparatively examined. Whereas CEU educates MA and Ph.D. students, SUN reaches out to faculty and professionals encouraging innovation and transformation of the higher education system by exposing important actors, mostly junior faculty who are open to change and new ideas, to courses which serve as possible models for them to introduce into their own curricula and methodology in their home institutions. The summer courses provide participants with an opportunity to gain insight into new multidisciplinary fields and topics, update their existing knowledge and exchange views with their colleagues. History As the need for multiplying the impact of CEU's mission was recognized fairly early on, in 1996, not long after the establishment of the university, the SUN program was initiated as well. Since the inception of the program, it has hosted altogether 120 courses, 3000 participants from 60 different countries ranging from East and Central Europe and the former Soviet Union to countries of Asia, Africa, and North and South America. Our course offerings cater for the various needs of academic and professional development in the social sciences and humanities across a wide spectrum of disciplines. These include practical training for librarians, archivists, journalists, NGO activists as well as such varied academic courses as anthropology, art history, environmental sciences, comparative religion, political science, international relations, legal studies, etc. The program encourages topics in newly emerging fields such as complex systems, digital literacy, health care law, etc., to which participants may not have been previously exposed. Issues addressed by the courses tend to focus on currently relevant ones for emerging democracies, for instance, ethnic relations, migration, nationalism and transnationalism, human rights, urban development, poverty reduction, local governments, religion and identity and gender. These issues are discussed in a general theoretical framework as well as embedded in the context of the actual countries the participants come from. Frequently, site visits or field trips help put flesh and blood on all the material discussed in class. Program description Courses can last two or three weeks. Based on the CEU credit hour system, each course has a teaching load of 24 hours per week (one hour is 50 minutes long). Course proposals offering to prepare a distance learning package are strongly encouraged. As the SUN program cannot fund the DL component, external funding should be secured and indicated if available in the course proposal. These courses, if approved, may be designed in various formats. For example, they can be divided into 3 phases: (1) pre-course Distance Learning, (2) one-week face-to-face, and (3) post-course Distance Learning. Since connectivity in many countries of our target regions may not be advanced enough, the DL phases should primarily rely on mailing out printed materials in advance and keeping contact with participants via e-mail. Some, but not an extensive use of web sites can also be included in the proposal. For more details about DL experiences in the program, please consult the SUN Office. Topics SUN courses primarily focus on fields and topics in the social sciences and humanities for which there is a crucial need in the region in terms of curriculum development. In order to assist with the introduction of new courses, course proposals should aim at identifying these relevant fields and topics as well as familiarizing prospective participants with the current literature of the subject. Interdisciplinary approaches and explorations of disciplines for which there is wide demand in the region are strongly encouraged. Since business and marketing are not part of CEU's academic curriculum and research interest, proposals in these fields and topics will not be considered by the CEU SUN Board. Issues of particular interest for the program that applicants may want to consider including into their applications are the following: 1) Integrative Perspectives in Women's and Gender Studies: - The Interrelations of Gender, Class, Race, Ethnicity, and Citizenship - Gender in Culture and Society 2) Regional sustainability in a post-socialist context - a closer study of cultural, economic, political and legal issues that examine and develop the idea of regional sustainability (consequences for non-EU elements) 3) Multiple Modernities (issues of modernization in a comparative, multi-disciplinary framework) 4) Institutions and the Production, Preservation, and Diffusion of Knowledge 5) China, Asian Studies 6) Comparative Religion A list of previously held courses is available on our web-site at http://www.ceu.hu/sun/sunindx.html You may wish to review the courses prior to your own submission. Target audience SUN courses are primarily designed for the most promising junior faculty and researchers involved in teaching as well as professionals, such as librarians, archivists, environmental, and computer experts, etc. Outstanding graduate students with teaching experience may also be considered for participation. Each course may take 25 scholarship participants and a few more fee-paying ones. Funding for participants Participation in SUN is fully funded for those arriving from Central and Eastern Europe, the former Soviet Union, Mongolia and other countries of emerging democracies worldwide. Funding covers tuition, travel, accommodation, stipend and insurance. Fee-paying Western applicants are welcome to participate, as well. There are a limited number of tuition waivers offered to Western students. Course directors and faculty (resource persons) Each course is led by a course director who is responsible for the academic content and the organisation of the course. As each course is allotted its own budget, s/he is the budget administrator as well. (Detailed financial guidelines will be available once the course has been approved by the SUN Board.) The course director recruits an international team of co-teachers (resource persons), preferably an even mixture of eastern and western scholars, who design the course content, the syllabus, the reading lists, etc. in close co-operation. Each course director can hire a co-ordinator to help with administrative tasks. The SUN Office is responsible for the overall organisation of the courses in terms of recruitment, processing applications, taking care of travel and housing arrangements, etc. Course Funding You will find information about compensation and other costs related to the course in Attachment 2. Any form of matching funding you can bring to the budget is strongly encouraged and highly appreciated, such as travel grants for professors, scholarships for participants or contribution to course material development through co-operation with international organisations, etc. Supplementary academic services and events The academic program is supplemented with optional evening Internet classes and a series of teaching methodology workshops. How to apply? If you need more information on the program, the SUN Office staff is happy to send you more details. 3. Notification All proposal authors will receive notification about the results of review and selection via e-mail. Notification of selection will take place by the end of September 2002. Criteria of Selection In selecting proposals, the SUN Board will take into consideration: * The experience and expertise of the proposed faculty Holding a Ph.D. is a requirement for core faculty, however, some less senior faculty can also be invited to give a few classes. For professional development courses, the Ph.D. requirement is not indispensable. * Preference is given to applications, which propose a teaching team composed of an even mixture of Eastern and Western scholars/experts who are sensitive to and knowledgeable about the specific needs and problems of the regions from where the participants come. * The relevance of the topic proposed for the target audience of the program (emerging markets and democracies in transition) Proposals with interdisciplinary approaches and innovative course design are preferred. * The quality of the proposal and its adherence to the program mission outlined above. * Evaluators can form a better and more realistic opinion of the course proposal if the syllabus submitted is fairly detailed and concrete. * Evidence of a sound methodological approach. Proposals with an indication of including interactive teaching methods in addition to lectures will be given preference. Central European University does not discriminate on the basis of - including, but not limited to - race, color, national and ethnic origin, religion, gender or sexual orientation in administering its educational policies, admissions policies, scholarship and loan programs, and athletic and other school-administered programs. ATTACHMENT 1 Sample Letter of Intent I hereby declare that I am prepared to participate in the teaching of a summer course under the title "..." at CEU to be held in Budapest, July 2- August 1, 2003. Date: Signature: Position/Affiliation: ATTACHMENT 2 Course Budget Information Below you will find general information on certain budget categories - the detailed guidelines and exact figures will be available once the Board has approved the course. Course Revenue Based upon attendance of 25 scholarship students, your course has the following guaranteed level of funding: - 2-week course: $17,690 - 3-week course: $25,030 This credit system is in compliance with that of CEU. One credit = 12 x 50-minute long classroom hours. Number of credits Total classroom hours: - 2-week course: 4 credits 48 - 3-week course: 6 credits 72 Course Expenditure A. Compensation Categories: 2-week course 3-week course Total class hours 48 72 Total compensation for teaching 7,200 10,800 Course Director bonus 1,500 2,000 Course Coordinator Salary 200- 500 300- 600 Total Compensation 8,900- 9,200 13,100 - 13,400 (i) Salary Component 1.Course Director The duties in this budget category are administrative. SUN course directors receive $1,500 for leading a two-week course. For three-week long courses the sum is $2,000. For a single course, with more than one director, the directors will share the amount for director's compensation. If the course director has teaching responsibilities as well, see point 2. 2. Resource Personnel The compensation for a resource person is determined by the hours taught. In well-justified cases when the resource person's seniority warrants (e.g. academic position, publications, reputation in the field, etc.) the course director can increase the hourly compensation. However, such increases reduce the compensation for junior faculty. It is recommended that no single resource person teach more than 25% of the total class hours within a course. 3. Course Coordinators Compensation for course coordinators is set at $500 for a two-week course. For a course longer than two weeks it is $600. The course director may transfer a certain portion of his bonus to award the coordinator's work if s/he deems it necessary. If the coordinator is hired only for the duration of the course, his/her salary is $200 for a two-week course, $300 for a three or four-week course. For Hungarian personnel you need to include Social Security costs in addition to the salary, which is covered by the course budget. (ii) Benefit Package The package for visiting resource persons will normally include travel and accommodation. B. Non-Compensation Categories The course budget covers expenses in the following categories: instructional materials (course reading packets, book orders), social events, and field trips. Participants' travel, accommodation, etc. costs as well as telephone, photocopying, office supply, and postage will be covered from the central SUN Office budget, NOT from the course budget. ------------------------ Yahoo!
