Welke code vandaag?

1. Open Forms of Collaboration
De technologische praktijk van het programmeren staat steeds in relatie tot
het menselijk verlangen. Maar al te vaak beperken wij ons tot het onderzoek
naar de gebruiksmogelijkheden van het programmeren en de manier waarop we
ons daaraan kunnen aanpassen. Het schrijven van code laat ons echter toe dit
gedrag te veranderen en in twijfel te trekken: wat willen wij dat de machine
doet, wat is ons doel? Om meer complexe creaties te realiseren is het
uitdenken van nieuwe samenwerkingsformules en gebruiksvormen noodzakelijk.
Dit impliceert ook een overtuigd engagement voor een alternatief begrip van
het intellectuele eigendom.

08 /05  Introductie
Een publiek debat met Xavier Le Roy FR vormt de opening van het atelier. Le
Roy is een danser en heeft daarnaast ook een opleiding gevolgd in de
moleculaire biologie. Vanuit zijn tweezijdige loopbaan als artiest en
wetenschapper stelt hij de notie 'auteur' in vraag. Zijn interesse gaat uit
naar de studie van realiseerbare utopieën.

08 + 09 /05  Sounds In the Distance
Udo Noll D is naar eigen zeggen geen echte programmeur maar eerder een
kunstenaar die kan programmeren. Hij deed ervaring op door interactieve
artistieke projecten (Equator, Parole, Humbot...) te 'vertalen' vanuit de
informatica. Onlangs heeft hij een technologie uitgedacht waarmee geluiden
continu kunnen worden verspreid binnen een netwerk. Met behulp van een
minidisc kunnen geluidsfragmenten uit verschillende omgevingen worden
opgenomen en  ze worden doorgezonden naar een server die ze vervolgens laat
aansluiten op een dynamische database van geluiden.

10 + 11 /05  Peer to Peer
Freenet is een netwerk dat is samengesteld uit gedecentraliseerde computers.
Zo garandeert het absolute vrijheid en inspraak. Door de encryptie-kwaliteit
en de gedecentraliseerde architectuur van het systeem vormt Freenet zonder
twijfel een waardige opvolger van Napster en Gnutella. Steven Hazel USA is
muzikant en ontwikkelt codes voor Freenet. Hij zal een demo-versie van
Freenet voorstellen en de installatie en interactieve mogelijkheden ervan
toelichten. Vervolgens start hij een discussie over de mogelijkheid om de
huidige gesloten benadering van het intellectuele gedachtengoed op te geven
in het voordeel van de vrije verspreiding van cultureel materiaal. Kortom,
een discussie rond copyright.

agency stelt uiteenlopende vragen over toe-eigeningsrecht binnen het
schrijven van computercode. Hoe zou het Peer to Peer systeem de wetten van
het intellectuele eigendom kunnen beïnvloeden en omvormen? Loïc
Vanderstichelen zal het hebben over een problematisch aspect van
software-gebruik: de compatibiliteit. Hij zal de werking van emulatoren en
de problemen die zich kunnen voordoen bij audio-en videocompressie
toelichten.

19:00  Kaaitheater-studio's
Binnen het project Tricoter van Xavier Le Roy F zal een debat worden
georganiseerd. Vragen omtrent auteursrechten, noties over verdeling en
realiseerbare utopieën zullen een weerklank vinden in de activiteiten van
kunstenaars zoals Jérôme Bel F en juristen zoals Annabelle Hagman F.

Quel code pour aujourd'hui?

1.1 Open Forms of Collaboration

La programmation recentre notre relation à la technologie sur le désir. Nous
nous limitons trop souvent à comprendre ce qu'elle nous permet de faire et à
nous y adapter. L'écriture du code permet de modifier ce comportement: que
voulons-nous que la machine fasse, quel est notre projet? On ne s'en sortira
pas seuls. Pour aboutir à des créations complexes, il faut inventer de
nouvelles formes de collaboration et de nouvelles formes d'usage. Et
s'engager résolument dans une approche alternative de la propriété
intellectuelle.


08/05 Introduction

L'atelier s'ouvrira par une discussion ouverte avec Xavier Le Roy FR. Xavier
Le Roy est danseur, il a suivi une formation en biologie moléculaire. Son
double parcours de performeur et de scientifique l'ont amené à questionner
la notion d'auteur et à s'intéresser à la production d'utopies réalisables.

Udo Noll D est selon ses dires pas vraiment un programmeur mais un artiste
qui sait programmer. Il a une très longue expérience de la traduction
informatique de projets artistiques participatifs (Equator, Parole,
Humbot...). Récemment, il a décidé d'inventer une technologie pour en
produire une diffusion continue de son en direct sur le réseau,: un
promeneur muni d'un minidisc peut désormais envoyer en continu les sons qui
composent son environnement à un serveur qui les combine à une base de
données dynamique constituée d'échantillons sonores.

Le réseau Freenet est un réseau constitué d'ordinateurs décentralisés. Il a
été inventé pour garantir une liberté de parole absolue. La qualité de son
cryptage et la gestion décentralisée de ses ressources en font un redoutable
successeur de Napster et Gnutella.
Steven Hazel USA est musicien et codeur pour Freenet. Il fera une démo de
Freenet, de son installation et des modes de participation au projet.
Ensuite, il ouvrira le débat sur l'opportunité d'abandonner une conception
fermée de la propriété intellectuelle au profit de la liberté de circulation
des matériaux culturels.

banque de données Usage-faire. Il s'attachera aux pratiques de
réapropriation inhérentes à l'écriture du code.
Loïc Vanderstichelen abordera un aspect problématique pour les tenants du
code propriétaire: la compatibilité. Pour ce faire, il introduira à l'usage
des émulateurs et à la compression audio et vidéo.

Which code for today ?

1 Open Forms of Collaboration

Programming is connected to desire. As techno users we are too often limited
by the computer in the realisation of our projects. Code writing allows us
to modify this: what do WE want the machine to do, what is OUR project? We
can't do it alone. To achieve complex realisations, we have to invent new
forms of collaboration, new forms of practice, and engage firmly in an
alternative approach towards intellectual property.

The workshop will begin with an open discussion with Xavier Le Roy FR.
Xavier Le Roy is a dancer, but has also trained as a molecular biologist.
His experience as a performer and scientist made him suspicious of the
notion of authorship and shaped his interest in the production of attainable
utopias.

Udo Noll D said: I am not a programmer but an artist that can program. He
has a long experience in projects where technology and collaborative art
interact. Recently he decided to produce a continuous sound stream live on
the net: someone walking with a minidisc can send the surrounding sound to a
server that adds it to a dynamic database of audio samples.

The Freenet network is made up of decentralized computers. It has been
created to guarantee absolute freedom of speech. The quality of its
encryption and its peer-to-peer architecture have made Freenet a strong
successor of Napster and Gnutella. Steven Hazel USA is musician and Freenet
programmer. He will demo Freenet and explain how it can be used and
developed. He will introduce his new project Soundmosaic and open the debate
about copyright, the free flow of information and cultural goods.

practice of reappropriation inherent to programming.
Loïc Vanderstichelen will discuss a critical aspect for the tenants of
proprietary software: compatibility. For this he will give an introduction
to the use of the emulators and to the problematics of audio and video
compression.

fouille assistée par ordinateur plutôt que corporelle, surveillance des
parloirs, des couloirs et de promenades... Y a-t-il encore une limite
possible entre contrôle et protection?

Farocki's film is an assembly of images from video surveillance cameras in
supermarkets and prisons, scenes from feature and documentary films. It
shows the degredation of man as he becomes a mere object of control,
questioning the point at which protection becomes control.

'I Thought I Was Seeing Convicts' confronteert beelden van
controleprogramma¹s in supermarkten met opnames van bewakingsystemen in het
gevangenismilieu en combineert ze met fictieve of documentaire
filmfragmenten. Deze registraties gebeuren zonder enige menselijke ingreep
en verlopen dus volledig automatisch. Computers besturen het toezicht over
toegangswegen, wandelgangen en verborgen hoeken. Valt er dan nog een
onderscheid te maken tussen controle en bescherming?

De populaire film en haar visie op de code/Science fiction, horror en
spanning/De code als visueel element en als dramatisch ingrediënt/Men tracht
de code te verbergen, wisselt haar uit, ontmaskert of steelt haar/Bron van
chantage en inzet van het spel, ze is het wapen van de ingewijden/Ludiek
instrument of attribuut van de macht, het is de toegangsweg/Maar er bestaan
nog steeds regels om het spel te spelen/Wie zal zal zich eraan onderwepen en
wie zal ze afwijzen?
