<nettime> ACTIONS TO END THE WAR IN CHIAPAS ON APRIL 1OTH |
ACTIONS TO END THE WAR IN CHIAPAS ON APRIL 1OTH "This is the war of disdain being carried out in Chiapas. The Indians are treated like uncomfortable animals. And Nestle, the multinational, wait impatiently for the affair to be resolved: the coffee is waiting... Near Acteal, in Polho, on a sign at the entrance of the camp of the displaced Zapatistas, the following words are read: "What will happen to us when the last of you is gone?" And I ask myself: what will happen to us when we lose the last dignity in the world?" -Jose Saramago, "The War of Disdain" It is this war of disdain that intensifies with each passing day in Chiapas. How much longer can civil society allow the Mexican government and its financial partners to get away with this genocidal war against Indigenous dignity? How many more must die? We must ask ourselves the same question that Jose Saramago has asked: "What will happen to us when we lose the last dignity in world?" What will happen to us if the Mexican government destroys the Indigenous rebel dignity of the Mexican Southeast? We ask all people of conscience to organize and/or participate in some kind of action to end the war in Chiapas on April 10th. Demonstrations, phone calls, faxes, emails, picket lines, vigils, electronic civil disobeidance, meetings at Consulates, poster/banner campaigns, fundraisers, collecting ballots-ANY ONE OF THESE HELPS TO SEND A MESSAGE TO THE US AND MEXICAN GOVERNMENTs THAT WE WANT AN IMMEDIATE AND JUST POLITICAL SOLUTION TO THE WAR IN CHIAPAS!!! The work however does not stop there. We must continue to increase and sustain pressure on both governments to end the war and implement the San Andres Agreements on Indigenous Rights. Already groups around the country are organizing community dialogues, caravans, events, film festivals, hunger strikes, letter and email campaigns-and one woman in Louisville, Kentucky has pledged to not pay taxes this year in protest of US military aid to Mexico. This is encouraging, however we need even more people get involved and take action! Through these actions and others, the objective is to reach new sectors and broaden the base of understanding of the political significance of the Zapatistas' struggle. Our final goal is to convert understanding and solidarity into concrete actions that can help bring an end to this war. So, we ask for a little piece of heart beginning April 10th... __________________________________________ Flood Net: Tactical Version 1.0 http://www.thing.net/~rdom/zapsTactical/zaps.html In solidarity with the Zapatistas we call on all netsurfers to use the automated features of Flood Net(Tactical Version 1.0) on 10th of April for 24hrs.
