I agree with Javier. Witness the sudden post-election increase of racist
violence, even in cities like New York.  

Here in so-called pluralistic Canada, swatikas are appearing on the
streets daily. A synagogue was defaced in Ottawa, of all places.

The same can be said for sexism. The offensive language used against
women in politics has accelerated to an alarming degree.

We cannot expect these trends to die away on their own. Ways need to be
found to stand and oppose. We need public discussion and we need leaders
to speak out. Mayor Blasio’s speech this week for example. 

In the province of Alberta, Sandra Janssen, running for the leadership
of the Conservative party, received so much verbal abuse from inside her
own party that she quit the race, quit the party and joined the
opposition. She then made an impassioned speech in the legislature.
“Enough is enough . . . our daughters are watching this."
