The best case is Bush ending up like Klaus Kinski in "Aguirre, The Wrath of God"--a Conquistador sailing up the Amazon on a battered raft, and whose only remaining followers are a tribe of chattering monkeys. It's not reflexively anti-government or even anti-union the way, say, Forbes or the WSJ's edit page are. Their critique of Bush is a bit stronger than I might have expected, but not shockingly so. I'm certainly not privy to the inner deliberations of the American ruling class, but I don't think Bush & Co. represent its proclivities or interests. They seem instead to represent an ideological, sectoral, and geographic minority withing the elite: religious conservative in ideology, oil and weapons in business, and a Southern/Texan provincial anticosmopolitan mindset. -- Doug Henwood Left Business Observer 38 Greene St - 4th fl.
