<nettime> An interview w/Thomas Frank |
Subj: [7-11] The Big Question Date: 7/12/2001 5:50:05 PM Central Daylight Time From: Nmherman@aol.com Sender: 7-11-admin@mail.ljudmila.org Reply-to: <A HREF="mailto:7-11@mail.ljudmila.org">7-11@mail.ljudmila.org</A> To: 7-11@mail.ljudmila.org >From an interview with Thomas Frank at http://www.mediachannel.org/views/interviews/frank.shtml Q: Yet, scale for scale, the cultural shift requisite to reversing our impact on the natural world can only come of swift, wide communication and public change. If our tools of communication are contingent upon corporate media as we know it, then we cannot be using them in the way they need to be used. How do you imagine media in a whole new way? A: That's the big question. If I could answer that one. . . . Q: If we look at labor organizing against industrial-production monopolies in the Industrial Age, why not look at communicators organizing against discourse monopolies now in the Information Age? A: Maybe we will. Things are changing out there in the world of intelligentsia because things are falling apart in academiaâ”at least in the humanities. There is a floating army of unemployed Ph.D.s, thinkers and readers. Historically, whenever this happens, there is always a great deal of theorizing that goes on. At times like these, all sorts of wonderful things come about. Maybe we'll get a great cultural flowering, who knows? I don't want to minimize how horrified I am at the world, and how troubling it is, but at the same time, I don't think it's over yet. There are plenty of intelligent people out there. Labor unions are not illegal. There are many, many people disenchanted with the world corporations have made. To this day, I honestly believe that if the Democrats were to run on a platform much like the one they ran on in say 1936 or 1940, they would win by a massive margin. They need to talk about social class and going after the corporations. But they don't want to do that, the people in office now are perfectly comfortable with their ties to money. They're not planning on passing any great, sweeping legislation anyway. These things can be taken on, though; they can change. I don't mean to be a complete pessimist. I think the public would go for something like this; I don't think they've been co-opted by entertainment and pleasure and don't care anymore about their real lives. _____ _ _ # > # __/\__ |___ | / / | __/\__ |___ | / / | # > # \ / / /____| | | \ / / /____| | | # > # /_ _\ / /_____| | | /_ _\ / /_____| | | # > # | | \ / / /____| | | # > # /_ _\ / /_____| | | /_ _\ / /_____| | | # > # | | \ / / /____| | | # > # /_ _\ / /_____| | | /_ _\ / /_____| | | # > # | | \ / / /____| | | # > # /_ _\ / /_____| | | /_ _\ / /_____| | | # > # _____ _ _ # > # __/\__ |___ | / / | __/\__ |___ | / / | # > # \ / / /____| _____ _ _ # > # __/\__ |___ | / / | __/\__ |___ | / / | # > # \ / / /____| | | \ / / /____| | | # > # /_ _\ / /_____| | | /_ _\ / /_____| \/ /_/ |_|_| \/ /_/ |_|_| # > # # > # # > #1.7.100(today="7-11.00 > # \ / / /____| | | \ / / /____| | | # > # \ / / /____| | | \ / / /____| | | # > > > Thank you for participating in 7-11 MAILING LIST > SUBSCRIBER SATISFACTION SURVEY. > > > > > ###################################################### > #1.7.100(today="7-11.00 071101010 07110101 0711.00100# > # # > # _____ _ _ _____ _ _ # > # __/\__ |___ | / / | __/\__ |___ | / / | # > # \ / / /____| | | \ / / /____| | | # > # /_ _\ / /_____| | | /_ _\ / /_____| | | # > # \/ /_/ |_|_| \/ /_/ |_|_| # > # # > # # > #1.7.100(today="7-11.00 071101010 07110101 0711.00100# > ########### http://mail.ljudmila.org/mailman/listinfo/7-11 _____ _ _ # > # __/\__ |___ | / / | __/\__ |___ | / / | # > # \ / / /____|################################################################## >## ############ ########## # ### ### ## ###### > #### ###### #### #### ###### ############## ###### > # #### ##### #### ########## ###### ### ####### > > > ----------------------- Headers -------------------------------- Return-Path: <7-11-admin@mail.ljudmila.org> Received: from rly-zd05.mx.aol.com (rly-zd05.mail.aol.com [172.31.33.229]) by air-zd01.mail.aol.com (v79.27) with ESMTP id MAILINZD17-0712185005; Thu, 12 Jul 2001 18:50:05 -0400 Received: from huda.ljudmila.org (mail.ljudmila.org [193.2.132.73]) by rly-zd05.mx.aol.com (v79.20) with ESMTP id MAILRELAYINZD52-0712184913; Thu, 12 Jul 2001 18:49:13 -0400 Received: (from root@localhost) by huda.ljudmila.org (8.9.3/8.9.3/Debian 8.9.3-21) id AAA15388; Fri, 13 Jul 2001 00:44:16 +0200 Received: from mail.ljudmila.org (localhost [127.0.0.1]) by huda.ljudmila.org (8.9.3/8.9.3/Debian 8.9.3-21) with ESMTP id AAA15366; Fri, 13 Jul 2001 00:44:05 +0200 X-Authentication-Warning: huda.ljudmila.org: Host localhost [127.0.0.1] claimed to be mail.ljudmila.org Received: (from root@localhost) by huda.ljudmila.org (8.9.3/8.9.3/Debian 8.9.3-21) id AAA15310 for 7-11@mail.ljudmila.org; Fri, 13 Jul 2001 00:43:43 +0200 From: Nmherman@aol.com Received: from imo-m09.mx.aol.com (imo-m09.mx.aol.com [64.12.136.164]) by huda.ljudmila.org (8.9.3/8.9.3/Debian 8.9.3-21) with ESMTP id AAA15302 for <7-11@mail.ljudmila.org>; Fri, 13 Jul 2001 00:43:41 +0200 Received: from Nmherman@aol.com by imo-m09.mx.aol.com (mail_out_v31.7.) id 3.6e.ce95bfd (3996) for <7-11@mail.ljudmila.org>; Thu, 12 Jul 2001 18:42:59 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <6e.ce95bfd.287f81f2@aol.com> To: 7-11@mail.ljudmila.org MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="UTF-8" Content-Language: en X-Mailer: AOL 4.0 for Windows 95 sub 113 X-MIME-Autoconverted: from quoted-printable to 8bit by huda.ljudmila.org id AAA15310 Subject: [7-11] The Big Question Sender: 7-11-admin@mail.ljudmila.org Errors-To: 7-11-admin@mail.ljudmila.org X-BeenThere: 7-11@mail.ljudmila.org X-Mailman-Version: 2.0 Precedence: bulk Reply-To: 7-11@mail.ljudmila.org List-Help: <mailto:7-11-request@mail.ljudmila.org?subject=help> List-Post: <mailto:7-11@mail.ljudmila.org> List-Subscribe: <http://mail.ljudmila.org/mailman/listinfo/7-11>, <mailto:7-11-request@mail.ljudmila.org?subject=subscribe> List-Id: a place for discussion and improvement of things <7-11.mail.ljudmila.org> List-Unsubscribe: <http://mail.ljudmila.org/mailman/listinfo/7-11>, <mailto:7-11-request@mail.ljudmila.org?subject=unsubscribe> List-Archive: <http://mail.ljudmila.org/pipermail/7-11/> X-Original-Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 18:42:58 EDT Date: Thu, 12 Jul 2001 18:42:58 EDT X-Virus-Scanned: by AMaViS perl-11 Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable X-MIME-Autoconverted: from 8bit to quoted-printable by huda.ljudmila.org id AAA15388 # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: majordomo@bbs.thing.net and "info nettime-l" in the msg body # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: nettime@bbs.thing.net
