ARTIST in Narrative Media University of California, San Diego -- Department of Visual Arts Assistant Professor, tenure-track, to begin July 1, 2015 Situated within the Division of Arts and Humanities at UC San Diego, the Department of Visual Arts http://visarts.ucsd.edu is committed to academic excellence and diversity among its faculty, staff, and student body. The Department invites applications for a tenure-track position in narrative media practices. We seek candidates who engage with the formal and conceptual components of storytelling, re-imagining how narrative is used and interpreted, from classical forms in cinematic, televisual, and video narratives to other established and emerging media forms and technologies. We welcome candidates with a demonstrated record of artistic and scholarly impact and fluency in the theories, techniques, and methods of narrative practice informed by an understanding of contemporary art, including attention to critical strategies, historical frameworks and narrative media archaeology. Possible emphases may include but are not limited to narrative cinema or video; new prosumer cinematographies; narrative sound design; interactive or transmedia storytelling; speculative futurism; video games, and other traditional and evolving platforms which reframe subjectivity by engaging narrative approaches that are conceptual, experimental and para-fictional. We seek candidates whose research, teaching, and service have prepared them to contribute to diversity and inclusion. Applicants are asked to summarize their past or potential contributions to diversity in their personal statement. Contributions might include leadership in teaching, mentoring, research or service towards building an equitable and diverse scholarly environment and/or increasing access or participation of individuals from historically underrepresented groups. The Department offers BA, MFA, and Ph.D degrees. Faculty in all areas of our department teach at both the undergraduate and graduate levels and support both the MFA and Ph.D programs by giving critiques, supervising independent studies, mentoring and leading student research projects, and serving on graduate committees. Candidate should have a record of excellence in teaching, evidence of grasp of academic responsibilities, and demonstrated potential for active university service. Rank and salary are commensurate with qualifications and experience based on UC pay scales. Applications are only accepted electronically.
