These often poetic, time-based works are counteracting the millennium frenzy and the narrative of grand ideologies through the aesthetics of minimalism and the genre of videoshorts. Crossing Over [CO] is an ever evolving series of producing and presenting videoshorts which thematically explore the crosscultural metaphor of the journey. This project is about passing through the localities of cultures, technologies, art disciplines, geographies and economies. CO is a true offspring of international borderless networking. The original concept of CO by Iliyana Nedkova (Bul/UK) has been developed in on-going collaboration with Nina Czegledy (Hu/Can). The project was initially established as an alternative framework for Eastern Europeans to develop, produce and present experimental individual or collaborative videoshorts. The CO philosophy of the journey is manifested in the nomanic nature of the project. CO is always on the road, moving westwards to different cities each year - from its inception in 1996 and 1997 in Sofia to Novi Sad in 1998 and Ljubljana in 1999. Up until 2000 more than 60 experienced video artists and first time video makers coming from various disciplines and more than a dozen countries have benefited from the CO festival activities. An unique feature of CO is that in addition to the production-driven residencies for selected artists there is an emphasis on public events including special presentations by international and local guests. Thus, CO plugs into the regional cultural scene as well as reflecting on a wealth of diverse experiences from a far. In its modest scale each CO contributes to the local cultural ecologies. In keeping with the nomadic philosophy of CO, the project aims to tour and present the works beyond the regional sites of production to venues around the world. Between 1997 - 1999 the 21 formal presentations ranging from Documenta X, Kassel to Ostranenie, Dessau to GMI, Leicester Square, London brought a wide recognition for the CO participants. Furthermore, a number of informal presentations spread the word of this project as a successful participatory model of art production and representation. An exclusive premiere of Crossing Over 4 videoshorts produced in Ljubljana is scheduled within the 6th Biennial Video Positive 2000 - The Other Side of Zero - which also explores the post-millennial mood of Y2K and after. iliyana nedkova | vr@fact.co.uk c u r r e n t t r a n s l o c a l p r o j e c t s VP2000 | the other side of zero | http://www.fact.co.uk virtual revolutions | http://www.yourserver.co.uk/vr crossing over | http://www.ljudmila.org/co ------Syndicate mailinglist-------------------- Syndicate network for media culture and media art information and archive: http://www.v2.nl/syndicate to unsubscribe, write to <syndicate-request@aec.at> in the body of the msg: unsubscribe your@email.adress
