Appel de l'Association francaise pour l'etude de la

SEISME TURQUIE - APPEL URGENT 
 
Madame, Monsieur,
 
Apres  le violent seisme qui a frappe toute la 
region de la Marmara, enTurquie, le 17 aout  dernier, nous avons fait 
appel à votre solidarite.Mais ce tremblement de terre, on le sait 
maintenant, a ete d'uneexceptionnelle gravite et, selon certaines 
estimations, il faut deplorer30.000 morts et 50.000 blesses, des centaines 
de milliers de personnessans-abri et des degats matériels considerables. A 
l'approche de l'hiver,les besoins restent enormes. Un nouveau seisme qui 
vient de frapper laville de Duzce ajoute encore a la gravite de la 
situation.
 
Notre Association a evidemment pris sa place dans 
la campagne de solidariteet a propose de limiter sa contribution a un 
domaine precis, quoique vaste,l'aide aux enfants, en s'attachant tout 
particulierement aux orphelins.Nous maintenons cet objectif.
 
Conformement a notre vocation premiere, nous avons 
contribue a faireconnaitre les consequences humanitaires, sociales, 
politiques eteconomiques du seisme. Nous continuerons à le faire dans notre 
revue,'Cahiers d'etudes sur la Mediterranee orientale et le monde 
turco-iranien',mais nous voudrions egalement concretiser l'assistance aux 
enfants victimes du seisme, plus specifiquement dans le domaine 
medical, pour les aider asurmonter les traumatismes vecus et prevenir le 
developpement d'eventuellespathologies, de type nevrotique par exemple. 

 
Une delegation de l'AFEMOTI composee de Bathilde 
Dopffer, Michel Chaoul(psychiatre), Moncef Bennour (medecin generaliste) et 
moi-meme s'est rendueen Turquie, notamment sur les lieux de la catastrophe, 
entre le 28 octobreet le 3 novembre afin de temoigner et  prendre les 
premiers contacts. Nousvous tiendrons informes des resulatats de cette 
mission exploratoire mais,pour continuer notre aide au-dela de cette 
premiere mission nous avonsbesoin de votre soutien. 
 
De nombreuses personnes ont repondu a notre appel 
et nous les remercionsvivement de leur generosite et de leur sympathie. Nous 
exprimons unereconnaissance toute particuliere a Marie-Christine Granjon, 
Armand Braun,Johann Strauss, Christiane Babot et Jacques Cugny pour leur 
soutien et leurencouragement. Mais malgre cette aide, nous devons neanmoins 
avouer que siles fonds collectes ont ete importants, ils ne nous permettent 
pasd'entreprendre cette action d'envergure pour laquelle il est 
indispensablede recueillir au moins 100 000 FF (cent mille francs). 

 
C'est la raison pour laquelle nous faisons de 
nouveau appel a la generositede nouveaux donateurs.

 EARTHQUAKE IN TURKEY- URGENT 
APPEALÂ Dear Friends,
 
 After the devastating earthquake which 
hit the whole Marmara region,in Turkey, on August 17, we made an appeal for 
your solidarity. It has  become increasingly clear that this quake was 
exceptionally severe,and, according to certain estimates, it could have left 
30,000 deadand 50,000 wounded. Hundreds of thousands of people have been 
lefthomeless, and there has been massive damage of property 
andbelongings. Now, as we approach winter, the needs of the 
survivorsremain enormous. And the new earthquake which recently shook the 
areaaround Duzce has added further to the gravity of the situation.  
 Our Association naturally joined the international 
solidaritycampaign. It chose to concentrate its efforts on one, albeit 
vast,objective - aid for the children, and especially those that 
wereorphaned. We intend to continue with that objective. Â As 
intellectuals, we have been able to provide informationabout the 
consequences - humanitarian, social, political and economic- of the 
earthquake. We shall continue to do so in our journal CEMOTI(Cahiers 
d'etudes sur la Mediterranee orientale et le 
mondeturco-iranien).
 
But, at the same time, we must work with great 
urgency to help thechild victims of the earthquake. There is much to be done 
in themedical realm, and also in the realm of mental health, where care 
mustbe given to help children survive the appalling traumas that 
theysuffered during the earthquake. A delegation from our 
Association (AFEMOTI)- including BathildeDopffer, psychiatrist Michel 
Chaoul, medical doctor Moncef Bennour andmyself - visited the disaster areas 
in Turkey between October 28 andNovember 1, in order to see the state of 
affairs and  make contactwith those working there. We will, of course, 
keep you posted on whatemerged from this first visit. But, now, in order to 
continue our aidmission, we need more support from 
you.     
 
A large number of people responded to our initial 
appeal, and wesincerely thank them for their generosity and their 
compassion. Wewould particularly like to acknowledge the support and 
encouragementof Marie-Christine Granjon, Armand Braun, Johann Strauss, 
ChristianeBabot and Jacques Cugny.  
 
But we must inform you that, whilst we have 
collected a considerableamount of money, we have still not reached our 
target of 100 000 FF(about 15.000 $). Â So now we are now making 
a further urgent appeal for contributions toour fund.
