Syndicate: Media Activism in the Czech Republi |
Modern and Contemporary Art Collection of The National Gallery in Prague And Terminal Foundation invites you to the discussion - Media Activism in the Czech Republic - part of the series Artist in New Media and symposium Translocation - New Media/Art (Prague 25.- 27.2) On Thursday 25. 2. 1999 at 5.30 p.m. In auditorium of Veletrzni palac /5th floor/ The Prague section of the Translocation - Absence project will be opened with a panel discussion " How to change the System? - Media Activism in Europe and Czech Republic" as part of the series Artists in New Media. The issues discussed will focus on the relation between art, culture, new technologies and politics. The phenomenon of media activism, which emerged in the eighties in Western Europe, was paralleled in the development and progression of the ?unofficial" art scene in Central Europe. The discussion will involve various artists and theorists, including ?media terrorist" Heath Bunting from London, organizer and activist from The Institut for Old and New Media Eric Kluitenberg /Holland/, artist and organizer Michael Bielicky, media theorist and writer Keiko Sei /Japan/, media theorist and artist Miroslav Vodrazka, writer and theorist Bohuslav Blazek, editor-in-chief of ZiveI magazine Ivan Adamovic, sociologist Jan Jirák, artist Tomas Ruller and others. They will introduce their ideas and projects and share opinions about the situation in the current cultural media map of Europe, focusing especially on the confrontation of Czech culture with other countries. Why does it seem that Prague has disappeared in the late nineties from the European cultural scene ? How does an artist's strategy and role change in relation to a shifting society and economy? What possibilities does 'new technology' offer to an artist, if he/she wants to keep an independent and critical attitude to mass media and society? It there time to change the current system now? Is the museum and gallery still an appropriate space for truly contemporary art? These and many other questions will form the core of the forum, which gives a wide audience a chance to see and hear about projects and activities which otherwise receive little media attention.
