>Meeting with History
>29th May 1998, at the in Agora in Athens ,
>to participate in the Reinvention of Europe for the year 2020
>
>*** INVITATION***
>
>IX Agora of Prometheus-Europe
>Reinvent Europe : launching of the Project EUROPE 2020
>29th -30th May 1998
>Agora, Athens
>Greece
>
>organised by Prometheus-Europe and Prometheus-Athens
>with the support of the Greek Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Culture
>and the City of Athens.
>
>### Why this Agora ?###
>* To get together and choose our common future
>* This IX Agora of Prometheus-Europe will launch a project to
>prepare an Agenda Europe 2020
>* to provoke an interactive debate involving thousands of active
>members of our civile society from all around Europe, and even further,
>through
>the Internet; which will, by March 1999 (three months before the European
>elections),
>result in the distribution across the European Union of the Agenda Europe
>2020.
>
>### Who are we? ###
>We (Prometheus-Europe, the Club 2020 and our numerous partner
>organisations) represent the first generations who have been born
>in the European Community. For us this meeting with the history is not a
>choice but a necessity.
>We are over hundreds of active citizens voluntarily working in
>Prometheus-Europe association and its dozens of local Clubs. Since our
>creation almost ten years ago we have supported the construction of the
>European Union, taking a critical perspective,
>by emphasising the necessity for of its simplification
>and democratisation. Over the last 6 years Prometheus-Europe has
>developed networks
>in all the continents in order to understand better what will be at stake
>in the next decades. For us it is not a question of "making Europe" a
>sacred goal
>but rather one of learning how to use the European Union as an
>instrument and put it into service of the people and not just the states.
>
>### What will we debated? ###
>The future challenges facing Europe and which the EU should face with
>success.
>* The ideas of the Single Market and the Euro date back to the late
>80's. After the year 2002 and the introduction of the Euro, what
>direction will the EU take?
>* After the shock caused by Maastricht and the clear signal that
>European citizens had their word to say in the construction of
>Europe, and in the light of the Internet revolution, how will
>the Union respond to the growing interest of people to participate
>in the elaboration of tomorrow's Europe.
>* Faced with ever growing complexity and massiveness of the Community
>administration and political system, how will the Union succeed in
>simplifying itself and increasing its efficiency ?
>* With the enlargement programme, how will the Union ensure the
>harmonious integration of so many different nations ?
>* Vis-a-vis its neighbours, how will the Union, an emerging power,
>organise its relations ?
>* In order to meet the challenges of globalisation and issues affecting
>the entire planet, can the EU provide an example for peaceful cooperation
>and solidarity between nations ?
>*In order to continue to develop affluent societies, based on principles
>of solidarity, how will the EU respond to the new educational and
>training needs of its citizens; and how will it ensure the
>competitiveness of its enterprises ?
>
>### Where will the debate take place? ###

>and where it will grow from now on: the Internet.
>* On Friday 29th May at 4.oo p.m. the conference begins in the Agora,
>Athens.
>* On Saturday 30th May the conference will begin at 9.oo a.m. and
