* Introduction *

This is the third Syndicate Newsletter. It contains some abridged versions
of information that has been posted via the list before, and some new
stuff. Please, continue using the list <syndicate@aec.at> for posting info
that is of interest to the media art community in East and West Europe. The
V2_EAST WEBSITE <http://www.v2.nl/east/> is slowly growing now, and we
would like to invite the submission of links, descriptions of your work,
projects and institutions. The DOCUMENTATION MEETING in Rotterdam in
September which was first announced a couple of weeks ago is featured again
here. The first responses have been very positive and it would be great if
you could also send us references to archives, ideas for the themes to be
covered by the meeting, and contacts to people who have archival material
about media art in Eastern Europe. The benefits of the inventory of such
materials which we want to create and make available online are obvious.

* General info about the Syndicate list *

<syndicate@AEC.at> is the address of a mailing list which is dedicated to
an exchange of information and ideas relating to the situation and future
development of electronic and media art in Eastern Europe. The list members
include artists, curators, networkers, writers, festival organisers, etc.,
from East as well as West European countries and beyond, who, through the
'Syndicate', are trying to improve the communication and cooperation
between artists and organisations in East and West. The list was first
installed following the initial meeting of the V2_East initiative at
V2_Organisation in Rotterdam on January 21, 1996, at the end of the second
Next 5 Minutes conference.

*Ars Digitalis - Telematisches Gestalten im Informationszeitalter
Hochschule der Kuenste Berlin, 24. - 27. April 1996

Themes will include: the future of images; art on the net or net art;
digital seducers - interaction between art and marketing; goldrush in
cyberspace - the Internet as a platform and as resource; excesses and myths
of cyberspace. Invited are artists, entrepreneurs and politicians to talk

the development of foundations and applications of a digitally based media

* International Meeting on the Documentation of Media Art in Central,
Eastern and South Eastern Europe
Due to coincide with DEAF/ISEA 96 in Rotterdam, 16 - 22 September 1996
(exact date of the meeting is yet to be fixed)

Theme and objective

V2_East, the initiative of V2_Organisation Rotterdam that is directed at
developing and improving cooperation between media art institutions in East
and West Europe, is planning a meeting about archives and the documentation
of media art in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe.

The meeting wants to make a first step in the direction of mapping the
historical material available in different places. It will bring together
an international group of researchers, curators, artists and archivists who
will exchange information about existing archives and documentation
sources, about storage media and about the functionality of archives.

The objective of the meeting will be to draw up an inventory of such
sources, and to discuss ways of making the existing material more easily
accessible. We want to create a publication (on floppy disk) and an online
data base (on the World Wide Web) which will contain the information
currently available, and which can be extended in the future.

The meeting will consist of two half-day sessions:

(1) Public session with presentations about the history, documentation, and
archival situation relating to media art in Central, Eastern and South
Eastern Europe. This session will aim to provide an overview over the
development of media art in the past 25 years, it will outline the themes
covered by existing research, and will try to pinpoint areas which deserve
the attention of art and media historians. The session will provide
researchers with an historical framework, and will serve to offer an
interested public with a rare opportunity to get insights into this largely
unknown field of European art.

(2) Specialised workshop session in which researchers, curators and
archivists will talk and exchange information about the bibliography,
collections, archives, data bases, etc., relating to media art in Central,
Eastern and South Eastern Europe. The workshop will seek to draw up an
inventory of existing sources and will tackle problems of access,
publication, and the compatibility of different research tools.

Call for contributions

In order for the meeting to be successful, we should in a joint effort use
the coming six months to begin collecting the information which many of us
have and which can form the basis of our discussions in September. As much
of this information as possible will be made available prior to the
meeting.

We therefore request the submission of information relating to:
- existing published and online information sources;
- contributions to a complete and commented bibliography of media art in
Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe;
- archive contacts and information;
- names and addresses of researchers and institutions we should get in
touch with.

We also invite the submission of proposals for contributions to the
September meeting and suggestions for the themes that the meeting should
cover. As indicated above, these should especially relate to the history
and historiography of media art in different parts of Central, Eastern and
South Eastern Europe, to particular traditions, and to the general problems
of documentation in the field.

*Ars Digitalis - Telematisches Gestalten im Informationszeitalter
Hochschule der Kuenste Berlin, 15.-25. Oktober 1996
Exhibition, projection of partner WWW projects on the outside of the
building, 24-hour Online-Bar, symposium with international participants,
presentation of the prize in the Internet design competition, 'The
telematic gaze', for forms of telematic communication and cooperation.

*Metaforum III: under construction (the first hungarian content festival)
11 - 13 October 1996, Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts
The goal of the MetaForum III conference is to examine the growing
importance of multimedia tools, particularly visual, audio and live
transmission, in the immediate evolution of the web.
Organized by MRF in collaboration with Budapest Autumn festival and the
Intermedia Department of the Hungarian Fine Art Academy, will be held at
the Hungarian Academy of Fine Arts.

The Balkan Arts Foundation is working on a project for establishing the
first Electronic Information Center for the Arts in Bulgaria. Our aim is to
collect, analyze and disseminate information about culture and artistic
events all around the world, especially in Europe.

which includes a number of installations by media artists like David Blair,

The SIGGRAPH Education Directory is constantly being updated. We have many
fine institutions and programs listed, but are still missing many computer
graphics educational programs. The SIGGRAPH Education Directory is
