The CFMDC is Canada's longest running artist-run centre, founded in 1967 as a non-profit centre dedicated to the promotion of independent films in Canada. The CFMDC's collection features more than 1,400 titles by some 400 filmmakers. Distribution activities include: print and video sales; broadcast sales; rentals to film exhibitors; organization of touring programs and sponsorship of screenings. In addition to its distribution activities, the CFMDC lobbies on behalf of independent Canadian filmmakers and users, and engages in public education activities relating to independent film. The CFMDC is an employment equity employer. Responsibilities: - developing and overseeing the annual operating budget of the organization; includes preparing operating and project grants to arts councils and other funders - managing the day to day activities of the organization; includes fiscal management, ensuring that commitments to clients and members are met, managing staff, and maintenance of office facilities - lobbying and advocating on behalf of CFMDC members' and clients' interests; acting as a liaison between CFMDC members, clients, and the community at large -seeing that appraisals of staff performance are carried out, dealing with any problems with staff performance, and supervising union, contract and temporary positions -attending meetings of the Board of Directors and keeping the Board informed of all CFMDC activities and fiscal status - developing, in consultation with staff and Board members, when it is deemed necessary, structural or policy changes to be presented to the Board for its discussion and approval -participating in shared office activities: answering client inquiries, booking films, maintaining databases, etc. Qualifications: - demonstrated financial management and grant-writing abilities - excellent written and oral communication skills, mediation, organizational and administrative skills - involvement in and knowledge of independent film distribution - computer literate (the CFMDC operates a PC office); some familiarity with web and internet operations would be an asset - understanding of non-profit membership organizations - ability to work cooperatively with a small staff and volunteer Board of Directors - ability to speak and write French an asset Salary to be discussed with candidates Start date: between mid-June and early July Written applications will be accepted by mail or fax until 6:00 p.m., May 18th, 2001.
