The video installation "UNRENDERED" documents the ordinary everyday
situation of individuals waiting at the "Meeting-Point" in a train
station. The images projected onto two adjacent walls prompt the visitor
to study, compare, and analyse the behaviour of the people waiting:
extroverted scanning of the surrounding, introverted reading, bored
hanging around, nervous smoking S There is no communication between the
actors. Hardly anybody seems to care about the high "meeting-potential"
of the site.

Kalin Serapionov establishes an interaction among the protagonists of
his videos through the set-up of the installation. The empty space
between the two projection walls is filled with gazes and gestures as
symbols and metaphors of communication. The transitory and uncontrolled
situation of an overcrowded, open, public space is captured and
translocated into the closed system of a laboratory-like setting, where
the unrendered, documentary material becomes an object of controlled
observation. Through the screening of the public space as visual
fiction, the usually closed space of the "Project Room" at the Collegium
Helveticum is itself opened to the public and becomes, for the duration
of the exhibition, an experience as meeting point for the visitors.

This juxtaposition of both spaces confronts and alters the qualities of
the two completely different locations - different in terms of their
urban setting, their architecture, their social function and their
meaning.


The six-month residency of the artist at the Collegium Helveticum was

Die Videoarbeit "UNRENDERED" von Kalin Serapionov dokumentiert die
vertraute und unspektakul?e Alltagssituation des Wartens am "Meeting
Point" eines Bahnhofs. Die Bilder, die auf zwei aneinander stossende
W?de projiziert werden, fordern die Besucher und Besucherinnen auf, das
Verhalten der wartenden Personen zu beobachten und zu befragen:
extrovertierte Blicke hier, introvertiertes Lesen dort, gelangweiltes
Herumstehen, ungeduldiges Rauchen S  Doch kaum jemand scheint von der
Hektik der Umgebung erfasst zu werden und das hohe Begegnungspotential
des Ortes wahrzunehmen. Kalin Serapionov konstruiert nun durch seine
Installation fiktive Interaktionen zwischen den Figuren in den Videos.
Blicke und Gesten als Symbole und Metaphern der Kommunikation
durchdringen und verdichten den leeren Raum zwischen den beiden
Projektionsw?den.

Die fl?chtige, nicht kontrollierbare Situation eines stark belebten
?ffentlichen Raumes wird dadurch festgehalten und in das geschlossene
System einer labor?nlichen Situation ?bertragen. Das rohe (unrendered),
dokumentarische Video- und Audiomaterial wird zum inszenierten Objekt
kontrollierter Beobachtung. Zudem ?ffnet Kalin Serapionov den
versteckten, normalerweise geschlossenen Projektraum des Collegium
Helveticum, der f?r die Dauer der Ausstellung selber zu einem "Meeting
Point" wird - als projizierte Fiktion auf der Wand, als reeller
Treffpunkt f?r die Besucher und Besucherinnen der Ausstellung.

Mit diesem Raumtransfer verkn?pft die Videoinstallation zwei grundlegend
verschiedene R?me - verschieden in ihrem urbanen Kontext, ihrer
sozialen Funktion und Bedeutung - und ver?dert dadurch die Wahrnehmung
der beiden Orte.



Der sechsmonatige Aufenthalt von Kalin Serapionov wurde durch die
