Der spanische Künstler Chema Alvargonzalez lebt seit
1989 in Berlin. Er arbeitet insbesondere mit dem Motiv
des Reisens. Es sind Arbeiten, die in ihrer
konzeptuellen Anlage auf Landkarten und der Verbindung
von geographischen Gegebenheiten und Erlebnissen
aufbauen. Hierbei tritt neben die faktischen
Reiseerinnerungen, das Reisen ins Innere des Selbst
als Identitätssuche. Diese Suche versteht er als
Expedition ins Ungewisse und somit als Abenteuer.

Er inszeniert dies unter anderem im Rahmen von
Videoprojektionen in Verbindung mit architektonischen
Elementen wie in diesem Fall einem Pavillon, den er
durch Licht besonders nachhaltig inszeniert.
Architektur und Licht sind elementare Bestandteile
seiner Arbeiten. Hierbei wird die Architektur zum
Synonym für die Lebensumstände des modernen Menschen
und das Licht zur Metapher für die innere
Befindlichkeit.

In der Ausstellung "Crosslinks + Passages in-between"
stellt Chema Alvargonzalez nun in der Galerie ein
Ensemble aus einem Lichtpavillon und zwei
Videoprojektionen vor. Der Lichtpavillon ist eine
offene in sich beleuchtete Räumlichkeit, in der über
Kopfhörer die Reiseschilderungen, von fünf Personen
gehört werden können. Diese Personen werden in einem
der beiden Videos vorgestellt. Sie wurden in dem
Moment aufgenommen, in dem sie diese inneren Reisen
nachempfinden. Der Betrachter kann in den Gesichtern
die inneren Reflektionen und ihre emotionalen
Auswirkungen anhand der Mimik nachvollziehen. Hierbei
wird die verbale Schilderung über die Kopfhörer und
das Videodokument in Form der Projektion analog
gezeigt.
Die zweite Videoprojektion zeigt eine nächtliche
Kamerafahrt durch eine große, erleuchtete
Hafenlandschaft, in der sich die Kamera auf einer
ständigen Suche nach dem Licht vermeintlich selbst
justiert. 

Der Künstler inszeniert bewusst mit den beiden
unterschiedlichen Videoprojektionen ein klassisches
Differenzverhältnis. Durch die Gegenüberstellung
dekonstruiert er die persönlichen Reiseerfahrungen der
Befragten mit dem klassischen Motiv des Hafens als das
Ziel einer großen Reise. In dieser konkreten
Opposition gewinnt der Hafen die zusätzliche Bedeutung
als Ort der persönlichen Suche nach Licht und somit
nach der Präsenz des einzelnen Menschen. Der Pavillon
führt den Betrachter in diese Gegenüberstellung ein
und fokussiert ihn auf die Differenz der inneren und
äußerlichen Reiseschilderung vor dem Hintergrund des
Hafens als Sehnsuchtsmotiv. Das Licht wird dabei zum
elementaren Bindeglied zwischen den unterschiedlichen
Elementen des Ensembles.

Eine gute Frau im Verkehrsstau.....

"... Weshalb habe ich mich bloß hier hinein begeben?
Ich wußte es. Es gibt Tage, da scheint es, als seien
wir zum Schlimmsten verurteilt und trotzdem begeben
wir uns hinein... dieses Armaturenbrett ist vollkommen
verstaubt. Wenn man ihn genau betrachtet ist Staub wie
Samt und diese Leichtigkeit macht ihn im Grunde schön.
Die Laute sind gleichmäßig, sie haben was von
Meeresrauschen, wenn ich die Augen schließe und mich
in der Hinsicht gehen lassen, entspanne ich, wenn ich
aber beginne, die Gesichter um mich herum zu
betrachten, dann stehen mir die Haar zu Berge.
Bewegungsmangel bringt Hass hervor, das werden die
Nationalismen sein, Bewegungsmangel. Die Tatsache in
einer Kapsel mit einer Glasscheibe davor zu sitzen ,
die nicht so durchsichtig ist wie es scheint, ist im
Grunde eine Barriere. Ich habe Lust, die Beine
auszustrecken und kann nicht, ich erinnere mich an
Zauberer, die sich zusammengefaltet in eine Kisten
legen. Was für eine Angst! ..."

Crosslinks + Passages in-between 

The Spanish artist Chema Alvargonzalez has been living
in Berlin since 1989. He especially works with the
motive of travel. His works are in their conceptual
idea stimulated by maps and the linking of
geographical conditions with experiences. Here the
travel into the inner of the self as a search of
identity is placed next to the factual travel
memories. He comprehends this search as an expedition
into the uncertain and consequently sees it as an
adventure.

He sets all this in the context of video projections
or other tools in combination with architectural
elements. In the case of this installation a pavilion,
that is set in place most effectively by light.
Architecture and light are elementary components of
his work. Here architecture becomes a synonym for the
living circumstances of modern man; and light becomes
a metaphor for the inner state.

In the exhibition "Crosslinks + Passages in-between"
Chema Alvargonzalez is presenting an ensemble of a
light-pavilion and two video projections in the
gallery. The light-pavilion is an open, self
illuminated space. Inside, the travel descriptions of
five people can be heard on headphones.
These people are presented in one of the two videos.
They were recorded while they were mentally
re-experiencing these inner journeys. The viewer can
follow the inner reflections and their emotional
effects in their facial expressions. The verbal
description via headphones and the video projection
are shown simultaneously.

The second video projection was shot at night. In a
constant search for light the camera, supposedly
adjusting itself, travels through a large, illuminated
harbour area. 

With these two different video projections the artist
consciously stages a classic Differenzverhältnis
(differentiating relationship). Through this
contraposition he deconstructs the personal travel
experiences of the interviewed people with the classic
harbour motive as the final destination of a long
journey. In this specific opposition the harbour gains
the additional meaning of a place of the personal
search for light and thus the search for the presence
of the individual person. The pavilion leads the
viewer into this contraposition, focusing him on the
difference between the inner and external travel
description set against the harbour as a motive of
yearning. The light becomes the elementary link
between the different elements of the ensemble.

woman in a traffic jam...

"... Why am I stuck here? I knew it ... There are days
where it seems as if we are condemned to the worst and
still we go to get stuck in this jam... this dashboard
is totally dusty. Looked at closely, dust is like
velvet and this lightness actually makes it beautiful.
The sounds are consistent, like the sound of waves
breaking on the shore, when I close my eyes and think
of this and let go, I relax, but when I start looking
at faces surrounding me, then my hair stands on end.
Lack of movement produces hatred, that will be the
nationalisms, lack of movement.
The fact to be sitting in a capsule with a pane of
glass in front of me, that is not as transparent as it
seems, is basically a barrier. I want to stretch my
legs and can' t, I am reminded of magicians, that
folded lay themselves in a box. What fear! ... "
