the organisation for women in the arts (formerly the Women's ArtLibrary|)

JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Summary

To manage, develop and promote MAKE as the principal organisation in the UK
- and as a major international resource -  for the promotion and public
appreciation of work by women artists.


Critical success areas

Organisational development:
to provide the vision and leadership for MAKE's further development as a
well- known and respected promoter of work by women artists, including
contributions to the development of public policy on the arts, to curating
and exhibiting, to sharing of practice among artists, to extending
accessibility to the public and to academic research and educational
practice. This will include developing new systems, work practices and
skills within the organisation to meet targets in these areas.

Strategic and operational planning:
to translate ambitions and ideas into realistic plans and schedules for the
organisation and for individual staff and to manage a regular means of
agreeing and reviewing these plans with the Executive Committee, and with
funders as appropriate.

Public accessibility:
to increase the availability to the public of MAKE's work and collection
through publications, web access, digitisation of the collection and other
means.

Art world impact:
to increase the membership and use of MAKE by artists, curators and
exhibitors, academic bodies and public policy makers, in order to ensure
that the contribution to culture of women artists is represented,
appreciated and promoted.

Financial management:
to secure optimum recurrent and project revenue for MAKE from the widest
possible sources so as to ensure its financial stability and long-term
viability, including preparing and agreeing budgets with the Executive
Committee, managing budgets and cost controls, meeting own financial
targets, liaising with funders and presenting timely information, and
complying with terms of funding agreements.

Marketing and promotion:
to review and develop MAKE's products and services to its various clients
and audiences to be relevant to its purpose and their needs and to be
economically viable; to be a proactive ambassador for MAKE in arts and
public settings; to inititiate and develop marketing activities which will
generate income and impact to further MAKE's aims; and to ensure that all
events and publications bearing MAKE's name are planned and managed to
achieve optimal effect for the organisation and that no activity puts MAKE
at avoidable risk financially or of reputation.

Research and academic relations:
to ensure MAKE has the systems and programmes of activity to support
research into women's art practice, particular artists or themes, by women
artist members, academics or students, educationalists, public policy
makers, media people, public bodies or individuals; to develop educational
products and research projects with academic institutions; to develop the
relationship with CSM as MAKE's host and an important potential partner in
products and research.

Publishing:
to implement publication and editorial policies and to review with advisory
boards and the editors any publication to ensure that it is leading edge,
contributing to MAKE's aims and is financially successful.

Team management:
to recruit, manage and develop staff on a day to day basis, agreeing short
and medium term targets, implementing appraisal and appropriate training,
and ensuring consistently high standards of client services.

Other duties:
to undertake other duties consistent with the role as directed by the Chair
and /or Executive Committee.

FURTHER INFORMATION FOR CANDIDATES ON THE TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE
FOR STAFF ON INDIVIDUAL CONTRACTS

The post
The Director will work from the offices of MAKE, within the host
institution, currently based at Charing Cross Road. Following satisfactory
completion of their probationary period, staff are required to participate
in the MAKE appraisal scheme.

Salary
Salaries are reviewed annually on 1 April, based on performance and
achievements, and level of job responsibilities, with an overall increase
determined by the Executive Committee.

Salaries are paid on or around the 20 of the month by cheque.

Hours of work
35 hours per week and such additional hours may be necessary for proper
fulfilment of duties and responsibilities.

Job sharing and flexible working
MAKE aims to meet requests to work on a job sharing basis whenever
practicable. If a candidate is interested in job sharing, a letter with
details of the request should be attached to the completed application.
Flexible patterns of work will be considered depending on the particular
responsibilities of the post. If shortlisted, a candidate interested in
flexible working should let the recruiting manager know so that
possibilities can be discussed.

Holidays
24 days annual leave. The leave year runs from 1 April - 31 March. Staff
are also entitled to Bank Holidays and any time when the Women's Art
Library may be officially closed (e.g. between Christmas Day and the New
Year Bank Holiday).

Special Leave
Staff may be granted limited or unpaid leave under special circumstances,
such as the funeral of a close relative or approved study for examinations.

Identity Cards
All staff are required to carry identity cards to enable access to London
Institute buildings. All staff are required to adhere to this policy.

MAIN TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF SERVICE FOR THE DIRECTOR OF

MAKE



Location
The Director will work from the offices of MAKE, within the host
institution, currently based at Charing Cross Road. The Director will be
expected to travel in and outside London as appropriate for furthering
MAKE's aims or for a particular project.

Tenure
Following satisfactory completion of their probationary period, staff are
required to participate in the MAKE appraisal scheme - both systems apply
to all posts.
The probationary period is for three months and is a period for both the
new appointee and the organisation to see how the post is working out and
to iron out any initial need for change. The post will be confirmed as a
permanent appointment subject to satisfactory completion of the
probationary period.

Salary
The salary will be £25,000 and reviewable anually.
Salaries are reviewed annually on 1 April, based on performance and
achievements, and level of job responsibilities, with an overall increase
determined by the Executive Committee.The decision on any one- off bonus or
consolidated increase in salary is made on the basis of performance and
affordability. Both approaches have been taken in the past.

Salaries are paid on or around the 20 of the month by cheque.

Hours of work

attend meetings, e.g. with the EC, in evenings and occasionally at weekends.

Maternity Leave
A full time staff member who has completed one (1) year of continuous
employment with MAKE by the end of the twelfth (12th) week before the baby
is due is entitled to paid maternity leave as follows: 6 weeks at full
salary,10 weeks at 50% salary,13 weeks at 25% salary.

Staff members entitled to paid maternity leave are also entitled to take up
a total maximum leave, paid and unpaid, before commencing paid maternity
leave. A staff member on maternity leave is required to give 15 days notice
if she wishes to extend or reduce her maternity leave. Maternity leave does
not effect a staff members' normal leave entitlement (although she will not
be entitled to additional days in lieu of public holidays falling within
the maternity leave period).
