2001:
Berlin's newest Art
Quarter
opens its doors at
Jannowitzbrücke in the
S-Bahn Arches 46-50
After ’Mitte' and ’Zimmerstrasse'
at Checkpoint Charlie, the Berlin art scene moves into its third and
latest quarter, the S-Bahn Bögen - train arches - at the
Jannowitzbrücke. The new address for international contemporary art
is located on Holzmarktstrasse 15-18 - close to Alexanderplatz,
right next to the Spree River.
In the S-Bahn Arches 49-50,
BüroFriedrich will set up its permanent residence in continuation
of its participation in the second Berlin Biennial of this year.
BüroFriedrich's international exchange program that began in
1997 will be continued at this new location with the exhibition 4
FREE, the third part of City under the Sky, a collaborative
project with the DAAD and the Hamburger Bahnhof. This project explores
the intersections of art, science and politics. Asking more than 20
international artists to show their works in the four arches, 4
FREE focuses on aesthetic survival strategies in
particular. The exhibition opens on October, 6, at the weekend of the
Art Forum Berlin. 4 FREE will be accompanied by the
symposium Freedom's just another word that will take place in
November.
Mehdi Chouakri moved from Paris to Berlin in 1996, opening his
gallery in the Gipsstrasse. He is leaving the Scheunenviertel to move
with his new gallery partner Edzard Brahms into the
S-Bahn Arch 47. The inaugural show will present an installation by the
Berlin-based Italian artist Monica Bonvicini and will be opened on
September, 7.
Galerie Max Hetzler is opening an additional space in the
S-Bahn Arch 48 for international contemporary art and will begin by
showing videos from the Dutch artist Rineke Dijkstra. The opening is
September, 7.
c/o Atle Gerhardsen is moving his gallery from Oslo to Berlin
and will be located next to Chouakri Brahms Berlin. He starts with an
exhibition by the Berlin-based Swedish artist Annika Ström,
contributing to the diversity of the Berlin art scene. The opening is
October, 6.
We look forward to welcoming you to our new space and will soon send
detailed information on the 4 FREE program.
