What does the distributed, open, and civic city of the future look like? How can examples of participatory placemaking become a scalable method for urban design and planning, serving more citizens equitably than dominant developer-shareholder led schemes?

Authors Thomas Ermacora and Lucy Bullivant will present numerous examples of placemaking from all over the world, featured in their newly released book Recoded City.

They will discuss new collaborative, distributed governance and welfare models as emerging platforms of the open society, the democratisation of technology, ‘wiki culture’ and art as a community actor. It sheds light on issues including appropriate funding models, priorities of best practice in participatory placemaking, the nurturing of local assets, evaluation processes, and how to consider legacy.

This event is organized by The Hackable City research programme, part of the Lectorate of Play & Civic Media at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences & The University of Amsterdam. The evening will be moderated by Martijn de Waal.
