[Nettime-nl] Future of Presence vrijdag 10 oktober


Beste Nettimers,

het reguliere telefonienetwerk is door onder meer dataretentie en
aftapbeleid steeds minder een optie waarop je als individu kunt
vertrouwen. In de VS worden jaarlijks miljoenen burgers afgeluisterd,
in Europa blijken zelfs regeringen kwetsbaar voor aftappen (zo werd
onder meer de Griekse regering een jaar lang volledig door onbekenden
telefonisch onderschept). Ook via bedrijven als Skype blijkt censuur en
oncontroleerbaarheid wie er meeluistert een probleem. 

Het internet biedt charmante oplossings- richtingen hiervoor, gebaseerd
op open IETF-standaarden als SIP, SIMPLE, Jabber (XMPP), ENUM, Real Time
Text en andere realtime toepassingen van het internet. Die vallen onder
de gezamenlijke noemer "presence", omdat ze je volledige bereikbaarheid
onder je eigen voorwaarden bieden.

Morgen is een congres gewijd aan dit fenomeen, georganiseerd door
vereniging Internet Society en met een keur aan interessante sprekers
van over de hele wereld. Jullie zijn van harte welkom indien het je

Presence is de samenkomst van de verschillende manieren waarop we in het
dagelijks leven communiceren. Protocollen en standaarden als SIP, ENUM,
SIMPLE en XMPP/Jabber maken de convergentie tussen mobiel en vast,
instant messaging, aanwezigheidsdiensten, spraak en videocommunicatie
eindelijk mogelijk. De volgende generatie commmunicatie-apparatuur
brengt alles binnen handbereik van de eindgebruiker.

Future of Presence 2008 wordt georganiseerd door de ISOC.nl Special
Interest Group rondom Internettelefonie en SIP. Motiverende en
inspirerende presentaties door experts van naam uit binnen- en
buitenland, zullen in combinatie met de showcases en demonstraties
helpen om de voor- en nadelen te analyseren van het uitrollen van
diensten gebaseerd op deze technologieen - en daarmee van dienst zijn
bij het maken van beslissingen van serviceproviders en klanten om in
deze nieuwe richting te bewegen. Een must voor iedereen die actief is in
telecom, instant messaging en real time text.

De conferentie wordt gehouden in de aula van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek
(Prins Willem-Alexanderhof 5) in Den Haag. Aanvang: 9.30 uur.

* Robert Sparks, Tekelec

  Robert Sparks is a Principal Engineer at Tekelec. Before joining
  Tekelec, he was the VP of Research and Development at Estacado
  Systems, CTO at Xten Networks (now CounterPath) and has held
  management and research positions at Dynamicsoft, Lucent, MCI, and
  Texas A&M University. For over 8 years, Robert has focused on
  designing and developing SIP-based IP communications systems. Robert
  is a co-author of the core SIP specification, RFC3261, and several of
  its updates and extensions. He chairs the IETF's SIMPLE and GEOPRIV
  working groups. Robert is a Director for the international SIP Forum
  which has focused on improving the level of interoperability of SIP
  implementations by coordinating the SIPIt and SIMPLEt interoperability
  events. Robert is also an active contributor to the reSIProcate
  project. Robert has a BSc in Computer Science and a MSc in Mathematics
  from Texas A & M University. 

        "People are just beginning to integrate presence technology into
        their daily lives. We are currently in an era where the first
        thing we do with a Presence/IM system is ask "Are you really
        there?" That will change soon as we go through a phase of
        automation and tighter integration with devices. When it does,
        it will become clearer that Presence is not an application.
        Presence is an application enabler. However, some of those
        applications may not be what we expect." 

* Dean Willis, Softarmor

  Dean Willis chairs the IETF's SIP working group and has done so since
  since it started in 1999. His research interests include computer
  supported collaborative work and identity management. He developed and
  deployed VoIP architecture and service delivery platforms at MCI
  Worldcom, Dynamicsoft, and Cisco Systems. Currently, Dean is a
  principal with the Texas-based technology and intellectual property
  consultancy group, Softarmor Systems. He also lectures periodically at
  Southern Methodist University.

	"The focus of standards effort in the IETF has been to define
        the "one true Internet presence protocol" that could be used
        ubiquitously from mobile handsets to massive interdomain server
        deployments. This effort has failed: the IETF itself has
        defined two different protocols (SIMPLE and XMPP), and
        commercial deployments have diverged even more widely. Valid
        technical and social reasons drive this divergence. No single
        protocol meets the full range of requirements. The future of
        presence most likely involves multiple specialized protocols
        that are aggregated, mixed, and interwoven in the "mashup "
        style of today's web apps, with information being aggregated and
        remixed by custom server-based applications. Expect to see
        applications that combine availability, location, mapping,
        blogging, messaging, work process, and inventory management,
        among others. This presentation discusses the rationale for
        divergence, the applications expected to drive the future of
        presence in the Internet, and directional shifts in
        standardization efforts that may occur as a result."

* Alan R. Bugos, iBasis

  Alan R. Bugos is Vice President Advanced Technology & Engineering at
  iBasis. He has almost two decades years of hands-on experience in
  telecommunications, optical networking, data networking, and
  communications systems integration. He has held senior positions
  within GTE, as part of its Internetworking's IP Telecom Group and as
  researcher within GTE Laboratories, where he focused on high-speed
  multi-gigabit optical network design, "real-time" IP multimedia
  networking, data networking techniques, and DSL and xDSL for Internet
  services, and advanced voice/video technologies. He has published over
  45 technical publications, including a published laboratory manual for
  laser and electro-optics laboratory experiments, holds one DSL patent
  as co-inventor, and is a frequent speaker at technical conferences
  such as VON, IEC, and other IP Telephony, IP/PSTN conferences. He is a
  member of Eta Kappa Nu, Sigma Xi, the Institute of Electrical and
  Electronic Engineers (IEEE). Alan received a B.S. degree in
  Engineering Physics and an M.S. degree in Electrical Engineering, both
  from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville and continued postgraduate
  study at Tufts University.

        "This presentation will discuss presence applications, services,
        and signaling/network architectures that interwork with
        international VoIP carrier networks, a potential new source of
        revenue for service providers. Business benefits, new sample
        applications and services related to presence information and
        databases, ENUM/SIP registries will be discussed and emphasized
        for real-world applications linked to both PC- and web-based,
        mobile and fixed line services, that may generate more revenues
        and/or reduce operating expenses will providing unique
        applications/services to "on-line" consumers. " 

* Adrian Georgescu, Founder of AG Projects

  Adrian Georgescu is Founder and CEO of AG Projects. Based in the
  Netherlands, AG Projects is a leading European company supplying
  service providers with turnkey SIP infrastructure systems. Adrian is
  an advocate of IETF standards, member of OpenSER management board,
  founder and co-chair of the Dutch ISOC SIP Special Interest Group.
  Prior to starting of his own company, Adrian had accumulated
  experience with Tomrad Communications, Esprit Telecom, GTS, Ebone and
  KPNQwest. Adrian's expertise is the design of high-availability
  infrastructures, addressing and numbering systems, signaling
  protocols, provisioning and mediation systems, implementation of
  disaster recovery plans. Adrian has received in 1996 a degree in
  Electrical Engineering from Faculty of Electrotechnics at the
  Polytechnic University of Bucharest, Romania. 

* Wilhelm Wimmreuter, SCCT

  Wilhelm Wimmreuter works as a founder and systems architect with
  SCCT. He provides Systems Consulting in Communication Technology for
  suppliers and network operators. His professional career includes
  various positions with the Communication Group of Siemens AG, software
  suppliers and network operation companies. His present activities are
  in the area of Internet based architecture, network- and business
  design for VoIP and related services. This includes network
  convergence and the development and verification of sustainable
  business cases that evolve with the ongoing migration and shift of
  paradigm. 

        "Are we in a position to handle our presence states throughout
        all the communities we are joining? The session presents
        challenges and opportunities for behavior, management and
        binding of presence services across multiple communities. Users
        will bind project-groups, collaboration, sports or leisure
        communities as well as real world entities like goods, services
        and shipments in to their presence service of choice. This
        opens a wide range of business opportunities with
        authentication, authorization, user self management and service
        control to upcoming offers."

* Olle E. Johansson

  Olle E. Johansson, Edvina AB, Sweden, is one of the Asterisk
  developers with many years of experience in open standards networking.
  Olle is an active Asterisk developer with many years of experience of
  running Asterisk in enterprise and service provider networks. Olle has
  been teaching Asterisk since early 2005 and have previously taught
  many classes in networking, IP, IP security, LDAP, XML and other
  topics. Olle currently works on enhancing the Asterisk SIP channel and
  have participated in two international SIP interoperability test
  events with Asterisk. Olle co-founded Astricon, the Asterisk
  conference and the dCAP Asterisk certifications, He's also a member of
  the Digium Asterisk Advisory Board. 

      "The presence puzzle gets more interesting for every day. 
      Telephony platforms like Asterisk delivers call states and phone
      states, and users want to mix this with their personal presence -
      or do they? And who are allowed to watch my presence? Solving the
      enterprise presence puzzle will be a very interesting task for the
      Internet community. Today, we see first generation solutions that
      doesn't take enterprise needs in consideration. This talk gives a
      personal perspective and wishlist based on work with the Asterisk
      PBX and XMPP/Jabber presence in small and large- scale
      environments." 


* Carsten Schiefner

  Carsten Schiefner works for Telnic Ltd, the registry for .tel. Prior
  to that he held several positions at RIPE NCC, Deutsche Telekom,
  Primus Group and Siemens. During his time at RIPE Schiefner was
  responsible for the coordination of and led all activities related to
  the ENUM Tier 0 registry for e164.arpa. In this role Schiefner 
  maintained existing and established new contacts with governmental and
  industry bodies on national as well as international levels. He has
  been an honorary member of DENIC's Executive Board since July 1998. He
  has a background in Computer Science and Communication Science. 

      "This year will see the launch of .tel, a new top level domain.
      Traditionally, TLDs have been about mapping domains to IP
      addresses. .tel has a very different purpose: mapping domains to
      contact information stored directly in the DNS. What will this
      bring to the market?" 

* Arnoud van Wijk

  Arnoud van Wijk works with ISOC on a consulting basis to coordinate
  and advance activities related to the Internet and persons with
  disabilities. He is an expert in related Internet Protocol based
  technologies and e-inclusion issues. Arnoud was born deaf in a hearing
  family and learned to communicate in the hearing word by lip-reading.
  His high communications skills helped him achieve an advanced degree
  in biochemistry, studying at the Radboud Universiteit Nijmegen in the
  Netherlands. Arnoud has been an active participant in the Internet
  Engineering Task Force (IETF) since December 2000, where he has
  co-authored or contributed to various Internet Drafts and RFCs related
  to the Real- Time Text standard and Session Initiation Protocol (SIP).
  He has worked for a number of companies and organisations in and
  outside of the ICT and telecom area, such as Ericsson, Viataal
  (previously know as the Institute for the Deaf) and AnnieS - a Dutch
  company that sells mobile text telephone and ICT services for the deaf
  and hard of hearing. Arnoud has been a technical advisor for the
  European Federation for Hard of Hearing People and to the European
  Commission on ICT for e-Inclusion. Since 2001, he has also worked with
  the Trace Research and Development Center of the University of
  Wisconsin-Madision which has a partnership with the Technology Access
  Program at Gallaudet University in Washington DC. Since 2007, Arnoud
  started his own consulting company, working on ICT inclusion issues
  and technology.

        "Real-Time Text is conversational text that is sent and
        received on a character by character basis. The characters are
        sent immediately (in a fraction of a second) once typed and
        also displayed immediately to the receiving person(s). This 
        allows text to be used in the same conversational mode as
        voice, making it superior in usage to current instant
        messaging. Being a real internet standard (RFC 4103) it can be 
        easily integrated into new services. A look into the next
        generation of text-based interaction."
