De Amerikaanse filosoof en architectuurcriticus Nader Vossoughian  
onderzoekt in zijn presentatie de mogelijkheden van een democratische  
en op participatie gerichte benadering van stedelijke en sociale  
planning. Vossoughian observeert dat historisch gezien de stedelijke  
en militaire planning vrijwel niet van elkaar te onderscheiden zijn.  
Dat roept vraagtekens op wat betreft de haalbaarheid van zo'n  
benadering, Toch denkt Vossoughian dat die in principe mogelijk is.  
Hij zal in het bijzonder ingaan op het gedachtegoed van de  
Oostenrijkse filosoof, socioloog en econoom Otto Neurath (1882-1945),  
die eveneens op zoek was naar een democratische benadering van  
ruimtelijke planning. In zijn visie moesten de tegenstellingen tussen  
het op gemeenschapsvorming gerichte klassieke model van de Griekse  
stadsstaat en de anonimiteit van de heterogene global polis in elkaar  
op kunnen lossen.

Schrijver, redacteur, cultuurtheoreticus Steve Rushton zal een korte  
respons geven op het betoog van Vossoughian.

Neurath, die van 1934 tot 1940 in Den Haag woonde, is samen met  
beeldend kunstenaar Gert Arntz verantwoordelijk voor de universele  
beeldtaal van het ISOTYPE; een van de eerste systemen van informatie- 
vormgeving en een voorloper van het bekende pictogram voor toilet of  
winkelstraat. De tentoonstelling ‘The Global Polis' van het centrum  
voor beeldende kunst en architectuur Stroom in Den Haag, spiegelt de  
belangstelling bij hedendaagse kunstenaars en architecten voor  
utopische steden en visionaire samenlevingsvormen aan het denken en  
werk van vier historische figuren: Otto Neurath, Paul Otlet, Cornelis  
van Eesteren en Le Corbusier. Nader Vossoughian is de curator van deze  
tentoonstelling, die het vervolg vormt op de manifestatie ‘After  
Neurath' van Stroom Den Haag.

Nader Vossoughian: Otto Neurath - Information and the Global Polis

Abstract of the lecture (De Balie, Amsterdam, February 8, 2008)

Urban and military planning have been virtually indistinguishable for  
most of history. Ancient Roman towns such as Timgad and London were  
first conceived as military encampments. In the nineteenth century,  
Georges-Eugène Haussmann constructed his boulevards in Paris with the  
aim of stemming civil unrest. Given this past, are participatory or  
democratic approaches to urban and social planning possible? They are,  
at least in principle, and this lecture explores one such example.

This presentation looks specifically at the ideas and achievements of  
the Austrian sociologist and planner Otto Neurath (1882-1945), a long- 
neglected giant in the history of the Information Age. A founder of  
the Vienna Circle and the Unity of Science movement, a collaborator of  
figures as varied as Paul Otlet, Cornelis van Eesteren, Gerd Arntz,  
and Le Corbusier, he had an indelible impact on discussions about the  
modern metropolis. He advocated informal or participatory approaches  
to urban and social planning and attempted to find ways of  
democratizing public space in the contemporary city. In this lecture,  
he is presented as a theorist of the global polis – as someone who  
attempted to reconcile the tangibility and intimacy of the ancient  
Greek city-state, a place that according to Aristotle fostered  
community and democratic exchange, with the anonymity and  
heterogeneity of the global metropolis.
