Three virtuoso trombone players will be working in the STEIM studio
for the entire day, experimenting with electronics, computers, midi
controllers and so on. At the end of the day they give a concert,
presenting the results of their experiments. All musicians have been
working with electronics and computers already, but all three in a
different way. By working together, with STEIM technicians and POW
Ensemble leader Luc Houtkamp, new approaches to the music will be
developed and new technologies explored. This is live electronics in
optima forma!

Joseph Bowie
Born in 1953 in a famous musical family (brother to trumpet player
Lester Bowie), Joseph Bowie has been active in jazz music since 1971.
In his early years, he played with a.o. Alan Silva, Frank Wright in
Paris. From 1973-76 he played with Cecil Taylor, Human Arts Ensemble,
Leroy Jenkins, Ornette Coleman and many more great jazz artists. In
1978, Bowie with James Chance started his own world famous funk band
Defunkt, with which Bowie has been touring all over the world for
more than 25 years and has recorded more than 15 Cds. Besides, Joseph
Bowie has played with Yusef Lateef, David Murray, the Ethnic Heritage
ensemble and Adam Rudolph. In 2003, Bowie moved to The Netherlands
where he has been developing new musical relationships since (a.o.
with Hans & Candy Dulfer and with POW Ensemble). Apart from that, he
has formed a new funky group in The Netherlands, Kosen-Rufu, with
which he performs and gives music workshops throughout Europe.
Paul Hubweber
Paul Hubweber has been playing trombone since the early â70s in very
different ensembles such as Bullsâ Eye Ensemble, Kollegu Pischu, a
duo with Claus van Bebber (âVinyl & Blechâ) in which he used an
electrified trombone. In the â90s he worked with dancer Britta
Lieberknecht in various productions. He founded the trio PAPAJO with
Paul Lovens and Peter Kowald, who after his death was replaced by
John Edward. Another important group is SCHNACK with Uli BÃttcher.
Hubweber has been interested in the use of electronics from a very
early stage on and has worked extensively with STEIM and Michel
Waisvisz.
Hilary Jeffery
Hilary composes and plays music, writes and makes visual art.
Recordings on trombone and tromboscillator include sessions and
collaborations with Hugh Davies, Germ, Earthling, Sand, Kreepa, Band
of Holy Joy, Jimi Tenor, The Meta Orchestra, Paul Dunmall Octet,
Moksha Big Band, The Barton Workshop, Apa Ini, The Kilimanjaro Dark
Jazz Ensemble, The Mount Fuji Doomjazz Corporation and as a solo artist.
Nowadays based in the Hilcave - Amsterdam - Hilary often plays in
venues around "De Nieuwe Mokum" and co-organises a monthly series
called AUXXX (Amsterdam Underkurrent XXX) at Overtoom 301. In
addition to the underwater life of Amsterdam, Hilary often tours -
travelling through Europe, Britain, Japan, America, Australia and
elsewhere...
Hilary is currently developing a new group called Lysn to play
psychedelic drone music and has recently finished a second CD of solo
trombone and electronics.
Luc Houtkamp
Luc Houtkamp (1953) is a composer/saxophonist who bridges the gap
between the worlds of jazz-derived free improvisation and computer-
based composition and performance. As a virtuoso saxophonist he has
worked extensively in improvised music, collaborating with numerous
musicians and groups all over the world. Since the mid-eighties he
has also been designing his own interactive music software, resulting
in pieces performed by himself and in collaborations with such
musicians and ensembles as George Lewis, Wiek Hijmans, Ernst
Reijseger, Le Quan Ninh, The Netherlands Vocaal Laboratorium, the X-
OR duo and LOOS Ensemble.
By establishing his own computer group POW Ensemble in 2001, Houtkamp
has created a new platform for exploring and expanding the musical
potentials of the computer.
In 2005 Houtkamp was awarded the VPRO/Boy Edgar prize, the most
prestigious award for jazz and improvised music in The Netherlands.
POW Ensemble
The computer group POW Ensemble was founded in 2001 by Dutch composer/
saxophonist Luc Houtkamp, with the aim of exploring and expanding the
musical potential of the computer. Computer music is often thought of
as incomprehensible sounds that nobody can understand, apart from
some isolated nerds. A concert by POW ensemble is something
completely different, however: here, real music is being made! The
musicians use improvisation, live processing, electronic and acoustic
instruments such as oud and saxophones. The POW ensemble can be
regarded as the chamber ensemble of the 21st century, using computers
as musical instruments.
POW Ensemble has a pool of computer players and other musicians, from
which groups are formed for the various programmes. Regular POW
Ensemble members are: Han Buhrs (voice) , Guy Harries (computer,
voice), DJ DNA (turntables), Tom Tlalim (computer, theremin), Joseph
Bowie (trombone, voice), Marije Nie (tap dance), Jan TrÃtzschler
(computer).
Due to its specific character, computer music often finds itself in a
rather isolated world, where the listener gets the feeling that very
specific but totally incomprehensible musical rules are followed. The
POW ensemble opens up this isolated universe and places the computer
music in the centre of the musical world. The musicians enter into a
dialogue with, and comment on, certain musical forms and styles,
without denying the specific possibilities of computer music.
Electronic or computer music is not another style in itself, but has
the potency to move between different styles and musical traditions,
and cross many boundaries. It is self-evident that improvisation is
an important factor in the groups musical concept.
By making use of self-written software, a completely unique sound and
identity are created. In addition, the use of the computer in
improvised music offers great opportunities to create new and highly
complex forms of interaction. By connecting computers to interactive
networks, frameworks can be created in which not only the musicians
but also their instruments react to and interact with each other.
This way, the POW ensemble represents a new, unique force in
electronic music.
