When, as an artist, success is lacking at the beginning of your artistic career, the shift from living and working as a practicing to a non-practicing artist is easily made. So easy, that it takes some time to realize that this step has been taken. But what if your position in the artistic field is accomplished, you’re a successful artist and you decide to stop producing work? Is this to be seen as the end of one’s career, or as a statement towards the art world? Is it not possible to blur from one profession to another and for others to accept this decision as private rather than as a considered statement? Does the impossibility of ‘stepping out’ without the art world examining one’s reasons, implicate a radical fusion of art and life? When we talk about successful artists who made the decision to stop producing work, we also refer to them as having ‘stepped out’ of art. In the project Archiving Disappearance this phenomenon is investigated.

In connection to the symposium “Forms of Refusal” at the Van Abbe Museum, to be held there on December the 15th at the occasion of the Lee Lozano retrospective, in ‘SMCS on 11’ cases are discussed from the archive of Archiving Disappearance by guest speakers

Program
13.00-13.15
Word of welcome, Jelle Bouwhuis (curator SMBA) and introduction by Krist Gruijthuijsen, organizer of Archiving Disappearance

13.15-14.00
Passing time (On Tehching Hsieh) by Andreas Gedin

“Hsieh is an artist whose medium of expression is not words or sounds or paint, but his own life. His work consists of five "One Year Performances," done between the years of 1978 and 1986, and "Earth," a thirteen-year performance that stretched from the end of 1986 to the end of 1999. Each of these Performances involves a particular vow, a particular constraint, and a particular mode of being. Each of them is meticulously documented in a manner appropriate to its content. And, although Hsieh never explicitly states his rationales for his pieces, each of them implicitly raises profound, difficult questions about life and art and being, and about what it means to live in the world we live in” (Steven Shaviro).
14.00-14.45

‘Win First Don't Last - Win Last Don't Care’ by Bob Nickas
“Laurie Parsons made a modest stir in the mid-'80s with her ephemeral interventions. Less than a decade later, she had all but vanished from sight. Another testament to the brutal vagaries of artistic success?”

14.45-15.15
Coffee break

15.15-15.45
Anna Winteler update, by Hinrich Sachs
“Anna Winteler grew up in Neuchâtel, the French part of Switzerland, and got in the eighties internationally recognised for her video work. In 1991 she decided to put an end to her artistic career to pursue a living as a physiotherapist. When I met her last summer I still remembered her name and work clearly. After exchanging some thoughts we decided to make an appointment to talk about what drove her to this decision”.

15.45-16.30
Screening of Anna Winteler's documentary catalogue Discours des montagnes à la mer, 1988 (Kunsthalle Basel).

16.30-17.00
'The paradoxical representation of disappearance', an open conversation between Hedwig Saxenhuber and Krist Gruijthuijsen.
