"Breaking the Silence" is a group of Israeli ex-soldiers who, through photo exhibitions and lectures tell about their experience in the Israeli Defense Force. The aim of their talks is to break with the ideal image of a "civilized occupation". Collecting hundreds of testimonies, they argue that war crimes are not carried through morally flawed individuals, but actually cannot be avoided in such a situation. "Breaking the Silence" chose an exhibition format to push their arguments through. The exhibition created heated debates in Israel in the summer of 2004, and the group has been active, talking to a wide variety of audiences, ever since. The exhibition will be on display in Amsterdam between October 16 and 24 (you can find the exact details in the attached document). The exhibition is organized by Next Step, the youth group of Een Ander Joods Geluid (A Different Jewish Voice). In their lecture at the UvA, the members of "Breaking the Silence" will discuss their cause and their means, and will offer an alternative view of the IDF from the one side, and of the possibility to resist mainstream ideology on the other.
