STEIM presents on Thursday September 14:

SOUND SPEAKER 2: âANIMALS IN INSTRUMENTSâ

Comprised of unequal parts concert, exhibition, lecture and theatre  
play, âsound speakerâ presents interdisciplinary performances  
highlighting the inconsequential and the unpredictable in music. The  
artists and performers take the stage and use sound itself as the  
medium to address questions of musical aesthetics, dynamics and logics.

For the second sound speaker edition James Beckett will share some  
means of transposing various source material across languages, both  
visible and audible. The lecture will look at a few highlights in  
inventions of analysis and reproduction of sound, including a  
recreation of a siren to match the sound of a mosquito, an instrument  
of Rudolf Koenig (1832-1901). A conference recently attended (ICAD,  
International Conference of Auditory Display) will also be visited in  
a series of short audio clips, showing potential diversity and  
subjectivity in mapping information to sound.

Extending into visual display in the area of graph and statistics,  
Beckett will introduce some directions in his own pieces, both  
realised and still in development. One such piece being the premiere  
of a short concert, a score extracted from 1950âs rabbit  
experiments, in collaboration with musician Koen Nutters.

James Beckett (b. 1977, Harare, Zimbabwe) graduated from the  
Technikon-Natal, Durban, South Africa, after which he took part in a  
two-year residency in the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten,  
Amsterdam. Coming from a background of installation, sound has come  
to develop a more central role in his work.  This has been a research- 
based activity with output ranging from radio documentaries to mock  
ethnic bands, and museum displays documenting the cultural and  
physiological effects of noise.  The evolution in specific areas of  
the industrial revolution have also played muse; such as the  
foundation of synthetic colour manufacture and its relationship to  
BASF, and the cultural implications of vacuum tubes for the Dutch  
firm Philips.

Beckett has exhibited in various European, Asian and African  
countries over the last 8 years, details of which can be found on his  
website.  Much of the work presented at STEIM is in development for a  
solo-exhibition in November at Burofriedrich, Berlin, as well as a  
group exhibition he is curating on the subject of Sirens to be held  
at EAST66 Gallery in Amsterdam, March 2007

Koen Nutters (b. 1976, The Hague, Holland)
Studied bass and music in The Hague and Amsterdam conservatories  
having graduated 2001.
He is working in the field of structured improvisation and flexible  
or "liquid" composition. After forming âOffice-R(6)â and the âN  
Ensembleâ he constructed a method of verbally structuring improvised  
music by means of catagorising sounds and different forms of  
interaction and preconceiving different flexible archetypal  
behavioral forms of the resulting pieces.

He has worked, in both short and long term collaborations, with the  
following groups:
- Electro-Acoustic Sextet âOffice-R(6)â with ao. Jeff Carey,  
Robert van Heumen and Dirk Bruinsma.
- Acoustic Quartet âMayas / Nutters / Olsen / Galvezâ.
- Sound/performance duo âTAPE THATâ, with Christophe Meierhans.
- Randomized event trio âK&M J&Bâ, featuring James Beckett and  
musician Morten J. Olsen
- SOIL ensemble, Ensemble Adapter, and the Quartet New Generation
- His own N Ensemble composing flexible scores in space/time notation

He is one of the founding members of the N Collective.

The N Collective is a worldwide network of musicians, improvisers,  
composers, and sound-artists who work together in numerous projects,  
creating new and improved music under a shared ideology of critical  
consideration.
