CityScape 04 - ANIMATED CITY

Hole in the Earth van Maki Ueda
2003-2005 ...

Daarna reist Hole in the Earth verder naar andere plekken, o.a. in Marokko en Suriname.

Hole in the Earth by Maki Ueda
2003-2005 ...

Location: Diergaardesingel/Kruisplein in Rotterdam and Daarut Tauhiid, Bandung, Indonesia.

Since December 2003 Rotterdam has a Hole in the Earth. With this art work Japanese artist Maki Ueda has set up a permanent communication link between Rotterdam and 'the other side of the world', via a virtual tunnel straight down through the earth

Hole in the Earth creates a 'virtual public space' within the public space as well as a communication window between two completely different societies and cultures. This 'hole in the earth' in Rotterdam facilitates communication with inhabitants and passers-by in a district (kampong) in Bandung, Indonesia, 24 hours a day. People at both locations are able to see, hear and talk to each other, live and direct. Hole in the Earth is freely accessible at both locations, any time, day or night.

Hole in the Earth will be connecting to Bandung until late 2004. After that the Hole in the Earth will travel on to other sites in other countries, including Morocco and Surinam.
