Onderzoek en ontwikkeling voor het permanente leerproces
1. Gouden @penstaart 2001
Voor het derde achtereenvolgende jaar komen op lerarenopleidingen door
het hele land kinderjury's bijeen om te oordelen over de beste
multimediaproducties van dit jaar. Op de shortlist staan acht cd-roms en
twaalf websites. Leerlingen van de hoogste groepen van de basisschool
gebruiken door Waag Society ontwikkelde jurysoftware om tot een
beslissing te komen. De uitslag wordt bekend gemaakt op 9 november in het
Theatrum Anatomicum van de Waag. De winnaars zijn vanaf medio november
herkenbaar aan een Gouden @penstaart sticker.
2. Anansiweb
Vorig najaar opende in het Kindermuseum van het KIT de tentoonstelling
'Paleisgeheimen' over het Ghanese Ashantikoninkrijk. De kinderen die
'Paleisgeheimen'
bezoeken, kunnen meeweven aan het web van de spin Anansi, de koning van
de verhalen van het Ashantikoninkrijk. In het Anansiweb maken de kinderen
een eigen Adinkradoek, trommelen een boodschap en corresponderen met
medewerkers van de tentoonstelling. Voor het seizoen 2001-2002 is de
tentoonstelling volgeboekt, wat betekent dat er volop verder geweven zal
worden aan het Anansiweb.
Ananisweb is een Kidseye applicatie ontwikkeld door Waag Labs.

3. Technika 10
Waag Society ontwikkelde voor Technika 10 een website
over zonne-energie. Op 12
oktober wordt deze gepresenteerd, tijdens de Wetenschap en Techniek Week.
Technika 10 heeft tot doel om meisjes te interesseren voor techniek en ze
technische vaardigheden bij te brengen.
In het Solar Park kunnen meisjes door online allerlei proeven te doen de
principes van zonne-energie ontdekken. De site bevat daarnaast
spelletjes, informatie voor een spreekbeurt en instructies voor het zelf
maken van werkstukken met zonnepanelen.
Waag Society realiseerde Solar Park in samenwerking met Zegt De
Buurvrouw.

Onderzoek en debat naar de rol van genetwerkte media in de
informatiesamenleving.
4. Killerclub over patenten
Momenteel regelt het TRIPS verdrag de Europese patentwetgeving. Het
European Patent Office (EPO) heeft inmiddels 30.000 zogenaamde 'triviale'
patenten toegewezen. Dit zijn patenten op deelapplicaties zoals de 'One
Click Shopping' button van Amazon.com
Binnenkort presenteert de Europese Commissie een voorstel voor een
richtlijn inzake de octrooiering van software. De Vereniging Open
Software Nederland en de Nettime mailingslijst zijn toonaangevende
platforms waarop de discussie rond intellectueel eigendom wordt
gevoerd.
Waag Society besteedt aandacht aan de patentendiscussie in de Killerclub
van 31 oktober. Aan het panel wordt deelgenomen door o.a. Luuk van Dijk
(Vereniging Open Software Nederland) en Leo Steenbeek (Philips NL).
De avond wordt gestreamd via de Waag website.

Onderzoek en ontwikkeling van communicatietechnologie voor
performances.
5. Sher Doruff
Danstheatermaakster Gonnie Heggen werkt in september een week samen met
Sher Doruff, hoofd Sensing Presence bij Waag Society. Sher Doruff is
gespecialiseerd in real time performance technologieen voor theater en
internet en initiatiefneemster van het KeyStroke project. Hun
gezamenlijke bevindingen worden gepresenteerd in de Lab Serie die Gonnie
Heggen organiseert in de Melkweg.

6. KeyStroke
Studenten van de Groningse Academie voor Beeldende Kunst, Vormgeving en
Educatie, Minerva, leren omgaan met KeyStroke, de multimedia synthesizer
ontwikkelt door Waag Labs. De lessen zijn een onderdeel van het nieuwe
media programma van de Academie.
Arjen Keesmaat en Robert Steijn zullen een gastles geven over de
technische toepassingen en inhoudelijke consequenties van
KeyStroke.
7. ARTIST IN RESIDENCE / HARWOOD
Sinds het voorjaar van 2001 verblijft multimedia kunstenaar Harwood op
uitnodiging van Waag Society in Amsterdam. Hij ontwikkelt TEXT FM,
software waarmee sms boodschappen worden omgezet in spraak en LINKER, een
online multimedia omgeving voor het vertellen van verhalen.
In oktober presenteert Harwood zijn werk bij de opening van de nieuwe
tijdelijke locatie van Public Netbase in Wenen, de Artotheek Zuid-Oost en
op de Make World conferentie over de begrippen 'virtuele grenzen en
locaties' in Munchen .
Harwood is genomineerd voor een BAFTA Interactive Arts. Met Richard
Wright ontwierp hij Bank of Time, een screensaver. BAFTA is de jaarlijkse
prijs van de British Academy of Film and Television Arts van Engeland,
ook wel genoemd 'de Engelse Oscars'.
8. Catalogue of Strategies
Eind september is Catalogue of Strategies gepresenteerd, een uitgave van
BIS publishers over het oeuvre van vormgeefster Mieke Gerritzen. Het
vuistdikke boek bevat beschouwingen van Geert Lovink en Max Bruinsma en
geeft mede een overzicht van het werk dat Gerritzen maakte voor Waag
Society in de periode 1996-2000: slogans, campagnes, websites, cd-roms en
boeken.
De Balie, Waag Society en Montevideo zoeken op korte termijn naar een
projectleider voor de realisatie van het project World-information.org in
Amsterdam.
Dit project wordt uitgevoerd in VIRMA verband. In VIRMA, Virtueel
Instituut voor Research van Mediacultuur Amsterdam zijn naast
bovengenoemde instituten ook Paradiso en Stichting STEIM verenigd.

Research and development for a continuous learning process
1. Gouden @penstaart 2001 Golden Monkey's Tail 2001
Throughout the country children's juries are convening at teacher
training colleges for the third consecutive year to give their judgement
on the best multimedia productions of this year. This year eight cd-roms
and twelve websites have been shortlisted for the Gouden @penstaart
Award. Pupils of the upper levels of primary school use jury software
that was developed by Waag Society to reach a decision. The award winners
will be announced on 9 November at the Theatrum Anatomicum of the Waag.
From mid-November onwards they will be recognizable by a Gouden
@penstaart label.
2. Anansiweb
Last autumn the Children's Museum of the KIT opened its exhibition
'Secrets of the Palace' on the Ashanti kingdom of Ghana. Children who
visited the exhibition are given a log-in with which they can access the
Anansi website. Here, they can help weave the web of the spider Anansi,
who's king of the Ashanti stories. They do so by designing their own
Adrinka shawl, drumming a message and corresponding with the project's
participants. The exhibition is already fully booked for this season,
which means a lot of eager hands will help weaving the Anansiweb as well.
Anansiweb is a Kidseye application developed by Waag Labs.
3. Technika 10
Waag Society developed a website for young girls on solar energy. The
site will be launched during the Science and Technics week on 12 October.
It was commissioned by Technika 10 which aims to make girls enthusiastic
about technics and helps them to further their abilities. In the Solar
Park girls can do scientific tests online to discover the basic laws of
solar energy. The site also offers games, information for talks and
papers on solar panels.
Waag Society realised Solar Park together with Zegt De Buurvrouw.

4. Killerclub on patents
Currently the European patent right is laid down in the TRIPS treaty.
Over the last few years, the European Patent Office (EPO) has registered
30.000 so-called 'trivial' patents. They cover minor parts of
applications like the "One Click Shopping" button of
Amazon.com. Shortly the European Commission will present a plan to lay
down new rules for software patents.
The Dutch Society for Open Software and the Nettime mailinglist are
authoritative platforms for the discussion on intellectual property.
Waag Society organizes a discussion on intellectual property in the
Killerclub of 31 October. Participants to the panel are a.o. Luuk van
Dijk (Society for Open Software) and Leo Steenbeek (Philips
Netherlands).
The Killerclub will by streamed at the Waag website.

5.Sher Doruff
In October dance and theatermaker Gonnie Heggen works with Sher
Doruff head Sensing Presence with Waag Society for a week.
Sher Doruff's specialism is in real time performance technology for
theater and internet. She's also initiator of the KeyStroke project. The
result of their weeklong get-together will be presented in the Lab Serie
of the Milky Ways, which is organised by Gonnie Heggen.

6. KeyStroke
Students of the Minerva Academy of Visual Arts, Design and Education in
Groningen will be taught how to work with KeyStroke, the multimedia
synthesizer developed by Waag Labs. The lessons are part of the new media
programme of the Academy. KeyStroke experts Arjen Keesmaat and Rober
Steijn are guest-teachers on the technological qualities of KeyStroke and
its consequences for creating content.
7. Artist in Residence / Harwood
Since last spring multimedia artist Harwood is in Amsterdam on the
invitation of Waag Society. He develops TEXT FM software which translates
sms messages to speech and LINKER, an online multimedia environment for
storytelling.
In October Harwood will present his work at the opening of the new
temporary location of Public Netbase in Vienna, at the Art Café of the
Artotheek south-east in Amsterdam and at the Make World conference
on 'virtual borders and locations' in Munchen, Germany.
Harwood is nominated for a BAFTA Interactive Arts. Together with Richard
Wright he devoloped Bank of Time, a screensaver. BAFTA is the yearly
award of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts of England, also
called 'the English Oscars'.
8. Catalogue of Strategies
At the end of September Catalogue of Strategies was presented, a
publication of BIS Publishers on the work of designer Mieke Gerritzen.
The coffeetable book includes essays of Geert Lovink and Max Bruinsma and
also features an overview of the work Gerritzen made for Waag Society
over the period 1996-2000: slogans, campagnes, websites, cd-roms and
books.
9. Projectmanager World-information.org - Amsterdam
De Balie, Waag Society and Montevideo are currently looking for a
projectmanager to realize the project World-information.org in
Amsterdam.
The project will be executed in a VIRMA context. The VIRMA, Virtual
Institute for Research on Mediaculture Amsterdam, includes Paradiso and
STEIM foundation next to the above mentioned organisations.
A good command of the Dutch language is a basic requirement for this job.
