[Nettime-nl] Sonic Acts 2000
|
(below there's an Inglish version)
Geachte lezer,
Met enige trots willen wij U attenderen op het volgende programma:
SONIC ACTS 2000
Door nostalgie overvallen denk ik met liefde terug aan de klanken van electro pioniers als Kraftwerk, Yellow, D.A.F. (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft) en New Order.

SONIC ACTS 2000
7 & 8 December, PARADISO
{HYPERLINK http://www.sonicacts.com }www.sonicacts.com
The yearly two-day festival Sonic Acts is platform and temporary laboratory for young interdisciplinary artists. Sonic Acts stages and presents their work and artistic experiments in a professional venue for a mixed audience consisting of specifically interested art- lovers as well as a general public for dance and popmusic. Sonic Acts expressly offers its participants ample opportunity to meet, exchange views, and possibly even co-operate or perform as an ‘ad hoc’-formation.
Ever since its first edition in 1994, Sonic Acts has been an important platform for the presentation of new attitudes amongst young artists, who by their preference of interdisciplinary art, confrontations, blending and fusing, presently transform arts and culture into an as yet little known domain of cultural and artistic practices. Sonic Acts, moreover, plays quite an important role in disseminating these attitudes and its products, as well as stimulating the professional development of participating artists, some of them students at the time.
Sonic Acts started from the co-operation between Paradiso Amsterdam and the Interfaculty of Image and Sound of the Royal Academy/Conservatory in The Hague. In former years Sonic Acts co-operated closely with a large number of artists and with institutional partners, like Theatre group Hollandia, STEIM (foundation for Electro-Instrumental Music) and the Institute of Sonology.
For future editions of Sonic Acts, starting in 2000, a new, independent, editorial board was installed, consisting of young artists: Arnold Hoogerwerf, Remco de Jong, Remco Schuurbiers, Florentijn Boddendijk, Sanne van Rijn, Bart Visser, Jan Peter van der Wenden. This new board works, according to its judgement, together with the staff and management of Paradiso, as well as the Interfaculty of Image and Sound: Pierre Ballings, Kees Brienen, Martijn Jansen, Frans Evers, Gepke Bouma.
For the upcoming 7th edition of Sonic Acts, this new board decided on a string of related themes from its own experiences, fascinations and observations in contemporary arts and culture. Especially a shared fascination for the ingenious structures, music and sounds of the early ‘classic’ computer-games (Pong, Space- invaders, Pacman) forms the leading motive for the programme. The editorial board decided on four related themes: games, pixel, arcade, landscape.
Both nights of Sonic Acts 2000, evening- and night-programmes, are built with new - preferably newly created - projects of image, music, sound and performance. The programme will show a carefully balanced mix of work by young, starting artists, students even, and the work of more experienced artists performing the international stage.
The board of Sonic Acts 2000 selects projects and ‘acts’ on the bases of their contemporary relevance, relation to the four themes or motives, performance qualities, and the relation between ‘image’ and ‘sound’ within.
Besides this programme of performances and ‘acts’, the editorial board of Sonic Acts 2000 also creates an environment in which both the artists and the audience will find interesting, stirring and surprising mixtures of art, culture, dance, some fun, as well as carefully guarded opportunity for improvisation and ‘ad hoc’-co- operation between artists and guests.

Staubgold 11 Mapstation - "Sleep, engine sleep" MCD/MLP
New release (26min+ running time) by To Rococo Rot member Stefan Schneider after his highly acclaimed solo debut on London’s Soul Static Sound label in February this year. Available both on CD and vinyl. Engineered and coproduced by Bernd Jestram (Tarwater), mastered by Bo Kondren (Calyx Desktop). With "Sleep, engine sleep", his second solo release, Stefan Schneider provides a beautiful collection of minimal pulsing rhythms, fragile melodies and delicate sounds. The seven tracks on this mini album show a very intimate musical language simultaneously recalling Chain Reaction, Cluster and the new school of "clicks and cuts".

Devices & Systems are Huib Emmer (Loos) and Tappo Kontakt (Remco Schuurbiers) who are performing live-electronics and video. As a point of departure their latest piece Eldorado contains a couple of sound and image samples from French crime movies of the seventies and other feature films. These sound and image- samples have been heavily treated and combined c.q. interloped with more abstract materials and parts. During the performance the various parts and samples are presented in such a way that a piece is created which can probably best described as a live soundtrack.
Huib Emmer is a composer, live electronics performer and guitarist. He has written pieces for many different ensembles and soloists, including an opera inspired by the life and works of William Blake. The libretto was written by the English author Ken Hollings.
He plays rhythm guitar in the Loos ensemble for whom he has written 3 pieces. Since 1992 he has been extensively involved with live electronic music.

Raster-noton Label-night (Raster noton / Berlin- Chemnitz)
Rastermusic/noton is a label co-operation for electronic music based in Germany. in 1999 both artist labels Rastermusic and Noton.archiv für Ton und Nichtton merged and the foundation stone for a co-work uniting sound and art design with strong attention to scientific sequences was laid down.
‘Rastermusic’ was founded by olaf bender, frank bretschneider in 1996 the main interest was to give receptive minimal-music following the direction of pop. Priority is to publish series with focus on a specific philosophy of music / sound composing.
‘Noton.archiv für Ton und Nichtton’ was founded by carsten nicolai more as an platform
for conceptual and experimental related projects in music, art and science. after the publishing of the still ongoing the clear series in 1996 the idea for a conceptual CD magazine occurred and was finally realised as the 20`to 2000 series on raster-noton between 1999 and 2000.

Funckarma (NL / Dubrecords)
On their debut album Parts, Dutch duo Funckarma combines complex rhythms with beautiful melodies. Roel and Don Funcken take their music very serious, but smile when asked how they make it al sound so complex. "We found out pretty quickly, how to create complex beats in a very easy way". Thus far their experiments resulted in three EP’s on the Dutch imprint Djak-Up- Bitch (D.U.B.) and a few contributions on compilations and for other labels. Still on the shelf are releases on Funkstörungs label Musik Aus Strom and Isophlux.
FUNCKARMA Parts DUBCD2 CD
This has been out on pre-order for a while and will finally arrive in the next weeks or so. After 3 very well received EP's by the talented Dutch brothers Funcken, DUB is proud to present their first full length CD album. Although they are often compared to Funkstörung, Autechre and Black Dog / Plaid, this dynamic duo shows that they have a style of their own. Having a background in hip hop and electro, they have a fetish for disassembled beats. Combining this with their knowledge of modern equipment (one of the brothers is electronics engineer and builds recording studios and the other brother is student of (Sonology) leads to very innovative drum and sound programming. For the CD, they picked one track from each previous record and added 8 new tracks, all which are quite diverse and show the different sides of Funckarma. Deep, moody and melancholic tracks are met by more energetic rhythmic tracks. The album is a collection of various moods but is tied together by the atmosphere and melodies.
"Nerds van het zuiverste water. Interviews geven ze liever niet. Hoefde ook niet. Met een Mac en een zooitje randapparatuur waar uw gastheer weer eens geen wijs uit kon worden schiepen zij hoofdschuddend op hun verknipte beats een achttien minuten durend geluidslandschap dat verbaasde, verblufte en amuseerde. Check ook hun cd PARTS." (Jaap Boots)

LIKE A TIM (NL / Dub - Djax up beats - Rephlex)
Under the pseudonym of Like a Tim, Tim van Leijden is making a musical career with a very extra ordinary sound. Having a lot of positive response in Europe he is hardly known in the Netherlands. If you never heard of Like a Tim it will be time. He prepares a new live-set and will premier at the Sonic Acts 2000. Like a Tim is a solo project and one with for sure a very interesting part of the festival.
The music he makes is auto-didactic and leaves the rules of the traditional composing far beyond. Now his newest release will come out on the English Label Rephlex.
Except of making music he is a very talented draughtsman who designs his own albumcovers!

ADULT (USA)
LABEL: ERSATZ AUDIO CAT.#: EZ-014 RELEASE DATE: NOVEMBER 20, 2000 FORMAT: VINYL 12" RECORD CATEGORY: MINI LP DETAILS: 5 SONGS (new / exclusive) GENRE: ELECTRONIC
After much success with their last release "New- Phonies" on the Dutch label CLONE Records, ADULT. returns home to their Detroit imprint ERSATZ AUDIO with a brand new 5 song mini LP entitled "Nausea". More than a simple dance 12", "NAUSEA" comes as a complete concept package, thus meriting mini LP status. This release contains 5 upbeat adrenaline-filled songs fusing a numbing combination and knowledge of the vocabulary used in electronic dance music. Sing along to addictive melodies with songs about Haptephobia, Philophobia and Tapinophobia. Extended metaphors about Misophobia become all to familiar comparisons to failed relationships and missed opportunities. But fear not, ADULT. has not developed a compulsion for Melophobia or Chorophobia. These 5 tracks open up from full melodic explosions to near noise classification and renewed 4/4 rhythms . Unique uses of live bass guitar in 3 of the 5 tracks enforce that ADULT. does not fear everything. So clean your turntable and needle, and prepare to feel to power of "NAUSEA". "Nausea" is ADULT.¹s 4th release, and comes right before their full length CD "Resuscitation" (EZCD-15) which is to be released on ERSATZ AUDIO in early March. ADULT. "NAUSEA" (catalogue number EZ-014) is the 18th release in the ERSATZ AUDIO / MONOPLAZA lexicon. ©2000 ERSATZ AUDIO. All music and lyrics by Nicola Kuperus and Adam Equation.
Glossary of Terms: Haptephobia (fear of being touched) Philophobia (fear of being in love) Tapinophobia (fear of contagion) Misophobia (fear of contamination by germs) Melophobia (fear of Music) Chorophobia (fear of Dancing) {HYPERLINK http://www.ersatzaudio.com }www.ersatzaudio.com

Staalplaat {HYPERLINK http://www.staalplaat.com }www.staalplaat.com
Staalplaat is a forum for soundartists, an organisation network with a music label, an e-zine, a publishing house, a radio program, an audio-gallery, shop, mail order and distribution company, based in Amsterdam and Berlin. For 19 years we have concentrated on new and experimental music. Where most organisations measure their success in terms of sales or riding the crest of the latest trends, Staalplaat was created to discover the rough diamonds, to take risks and embrace all surprises. The centre of Staalplaat's strategy is to invest in the future by stimulating new sounds, establishing and supporting new routes, connecting artists with new improvisational themes and experimental music ideas, the exchange and exploration of different metamusical concepts and thus expanding the boundaries of what we call "music." Up to the year 2000 we have produced over 300 audio releases by artists such as Muslimgauze, Rapoon, Ryoji Ikeda, Charlemagne Palestine, Jim O' Rourke, and many others. Staaltape as a label has a strong opinion on artwork and packaging. In the past we used hand made laser cut paper, CDs in leather (Illusion of Safety with a real bullet!), stolen Soviet army badges and lots more. In our Mort Aux Vaches series we produce a wide variety of materials, such as paper, plastic and sand paper.
Sonic Acts Team 2000 hopes to meet you at the festival!!!
