NETTIME'S WEEKLY ANNOUNCER - every friday into your inbox calls-symposia-websites-campaigns-books-lectures-meetings send your PR to sandra.fauconnier@rug.ac.be in time! 0.......1........2........3........4........5........6 [this arrived in my inbox a bit too late - but it's an urgent one, so here's an extra:] Date: Fri, 08 May 1998 07:32:13 -0400 From: ricardo dominguez <rdom@thing.net> Subject: MAY 10 ZAPATISTA ECD: FLOOD THE WHITE HOUSE WEB SITE! ON MOTHER'S DAY, MAY 10, JOIN THE ONGOING VIRTUAL SIT-IN, AGAINST THE WAR IN MEXICO, FLOOD THE WHITE HOUSE WEB SITE! http://www.nyu.edu/projects/wray/May10.html WITH A FINAL RALLY ON MAY 11 FROM 10 AM TO 11 AM (Mexico City Time) (11 am to 12 noon Eastern Standard Time) On May 10, The Electronic Disturbance Theater urges people of good conscience to return to the electronic stage for Act One of an ongoing World Wide Web of Electronic Civil Disobedience to Stop the War in Mexico! On April 10, in response to increasing low-intensity warfare against indigenous peoples in Mexico, simultaneous and collective action of people all over the world flooded Mexican President Zedillo's web site, sporadically blocking access. Since then, more indigenous communities in Mexico have been attacked by the State sanctioned violence of the military, police, and paramilitary groups. While more international human rights observers have been deported. On April 10, we pointed our web browsers at President Zedillo's homepage. On May 10 we will point our browsers north, to President Clinton's White House web site. The Yale educated Zedillo does not act alone, but in concert with Washington. In the 1990s, and especially since January 1, 1994, U.S. military, intelligence, and law enforcement agencies, with full support of Mexico's PRI government, have substantially increased their role in the Mexico's internal affairs. U.S. President Clinton, as commander-in-chief of the military in the United States, holds ultimate responsibility for the enforcement of this interventionist policy in Mexico. For these reasons, the White House web site is an appropriate target for Act One of the World Wide Web of Electronic Civil Disobedience. The Electronic Disturbance Theater encourages people to do the following: 1) Send email messages to President Clinton on Mother's Day (May 10). Remind Clinton about the mothers who were killed in the Acteal Massacre last December. Send your own message to president@whitehouse.gov or use The Chiapas Alert Network Automailer http://www.newhumans.com/chiapas/automail.html 2) Connect your web browser to one of the following Flood Net sites between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. (Mexico City Time) on Mother's Day (May 10)to help flood the White House web site. Flood Net will "ping" the White House web site every 3 seconds. Enough people connected to Flood Net at the same time will block access to the site. FLOOD NET WEB SITES WILL BE RELEASED ON MAY 9 CHECK http://www.nyu.edu/projects/wray/May10.html 3) End the virtual sit-in on Monday, May 11, with a concentrated hour of Flood Net activation between 10 am and 11 am, Mexico City Time (11 am to 12 noon Eastern Standard Time). Flood the White House site again for an hour in Solidarity and Remembrance. For your local time: http://www.nyu.edu/projects/wray/May10timezone.html 4) Spread the word about Electronic Civil Disobedience and return next month on June 10 for Act Two, Scene One, of the Electronic Disturbance Theater. - The Electronic Disturbance Theater Co-producers: Ricardo Dominguez and Stefan Wray --- # distributed via nettime-l : no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a closed moderated mailinglist for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: majordomo@desk.nl and "info nettime-l" in the msg body # URL: http://www.desk.nl/~nettime/ contact: nettime-owner@desk.nl
