Questo documento contiene le risposte alle domande più comunemente poste a
proposito di Hack-It 98. Viene aggiornato costantemente con le ultime
notizie e informazioni, mano a mano che il progetto prende forma.


Getting started
Cosa
Hack-It 98 non può essere definito in un modo solo. E' un open air festival,
un meeting, un hacking party, un momento di riflessione, un'occasione di
apprendimento collettivo, un atto di ribellione, uno scambio di idee,
esperienze, sogni, utopie, amore.

Se c'è una dimensione che caratterizza in modo particolare Hack-It 98, tale
dimensione è la volontà di vivere questi tre giorni (ma possibilmente anche
molti altri) autogestendoli in base ai propri bisogni. Hack-It 98 è un
evento AUTOGESTITO: non ci sono "organizzatori" e "fruitori", ma solo
"partecipanti".

Dove
Al C.P.A. (Centro Popolare Autogestito - http://www.ecn.org/cpa e-mail:
cpa@ecn.org) di Firenze, Viale Giannotti, 79 (Tel/fax: 055/6580151). Il CPA
è relativamente vicino all'uscita dell'Autostrada Firenze Sud (prendere per
Viale Europa e poi per Viale Giannotti). Dalla stazione di Firenze svariati
autobus fra cui il 23. Informazioni dettagliate su come raggiungere il CPA
saranno fornite in segito.

E' importante ricordare che il CPA è un centro sociale occupato che ospita
da diversi anni iniziative di vario genere. Attualmente sta rischiando lo
sgombero a opera della giunta comunale di Firenze (PDS) che vorrebbe radere
al suolo il centro per costruirvi una COOP. Hack-It 98 intende proporsi
anche come momento di mobilitazione a difesa del CPA e delle opportunità che
la sua presenza offre a chiunque sia interessato a sentire voci diverse da
quelle dei media e delle istituzioni dominanti. Partecipare a Hack-It 98
significa quindi anche schierarsi apertamente a difesa del CPA e di tutti i
posti occupati -- gli unici luoghi in cui iniziative aperte, gratuite,
autogestite e non mediate da partiti e istituzioni come Hack-It 98 sono
ancora possibili.

Quando
Venerdì 5, sabato 6 e domenica 7 giugno, 1998. Se hai tempo e voglia, puoi
far iniziare la tua partecipazione a Hack-It 98 fin dai giorni precendenti
l'evento vero e proprio, aiutando a sistemare gli spazi, installare la rete
locale e quant'altro potrà essere utile.

Come preferisci! :-)

Il CPA mette a disposizione un ampio spazio in cui trascorrere piacevolmente
i giorni e le notti del meeting. L'idea di partenza è quella di creare un
accampamento provvisorio, fatto di sacchi a pelo e, per chi vuole, anche di
tende.

Quanto
Assolutamente nulla. Incredibile ma vero. L'intero costo dell'infrastruttura
di base verrà coperto dal CPA Firenze Sud, utilizzando il ricavato delle
varie iniziative collaterali e di eventuali iniziative di autofinanziamento
"dedicate" precedenti e successive all'evento.

Di conseguenza l'accesso a Hack-It 98, seminari\workshops, connessione alla
rete, spazio per dormire, sarà completamente GRATUITO, a dimostrazione di
come si possano condurre iniziative, rapporti sociali e in definitiva parte
delle proprie vite in forme non mercantili e non mediate rigidamente dal
denaro.

Saranno a SOTTOSCRIZIONE invece gli ingressi ai concerti (5.000 lire) e le
cene (10.000 lire). Sarà richiesto un CONTRIBUTO di 50.000 lire per le spese
generali alle varie realtà di autoproduzione che installerano banchetti per
la distribuzione di proprio materiale.

E per chi non è un hacker?
Se non sei un vero hacker, niente da fare. All'Hack-It vogliamo solo VERI
hAcKeRz. Nel senso più 3l33t3 del termine: vero hacker per noi è chi vuole
gestire sè stesso e la sua vita come vuole lui, e sa s\battersi per farlo.
Anche se non ha mai visto un computer in vita sua. :-)

Computer e altri arnesi
Ci sarà una connessione a Internet?
Sì. Anche se Hack-It 98 non è stato ideato per navigare o per smanettare sui
computer (molti di noi lo fanno già per troppe ore al giorno), riteniamo
importante avere una connessione a Internet. Non sappiamo ancora di che
qualità sarà, ma cercheremo di saperlo prima possibile.

Ci sarà una rete locale?
Sì. Anche qui, non siamo ancora in grado di dare dettagli tecnici, ma è
molto probabile che la rete sarà basata sul protocollo TCP/IP, creando
quindi una "intranet" nell'ambito di Hack-It 98. La rete sarà cablata
principalmente con cavi di tipo RJ45, con limitate possibilità di utilizzare
cavi coassiali BNC.

Ci saranno computer disponibili per navigare?
Questo non dipende da noi. Noi possiamo cercare di garantire la connettività
e l'ossatura di base della rete locale. Ma non abbiamo idea di quanti
computer ci saranno. In generale, non ci saranno molti computer disponibili
liberamente: ognuno dovrebbe cercare di portare il proprio computer e di
collegarlo alla rete locale e quindi a Internet. Questo è l'unico modo per
essere (quasi) sicuri di avere una macchina su cui smanettare durante l'evento.

Posso portare il mio computer?
Naturalmente, anzi, è auspicabile che chiunque sia interessato a usare un
computer durante Hack-It 98 provveda a portare con sè la propria macchina.
Ovviamente i portatili sono più comodi, ma anche i normali computer desktop
vanno benissimo. Ci saranno tavoli e luoghi riparati da
pioggia/vento/polvere in cui collocarli.

Cos'altro mi serve?
Se vuoi collegare il tuo computer alla rete locale e quindi a Internet, hai
bisogno di una scheda di rete. Se non ce l'hai già, puoi acquistare una
scheda di rete ISA o PCI per circa 50.000 lire in qualsiasi negozio di
materiale informatico. Se possiedi un portatile o un computer non IBM
compatibile dovrai spendere un po' di più. Attenzione: la rete locale sarà
cablata principalmente con cavi di tipo RJ45 -- si raccomanda quindi
caldamente di procurarsi schede, cavi e connettori di questo tipo.

Posso portare altre apparecchiature elettroniche?
Naturalmente sì. Sono benvenute macchine di tutti i tipi: trasmettitori
radio, telefoni cellulari, pagers, radioscanner, telecomandi, tostapane,
eccetera eccetera. In particolare, ci sarà probabilmente grandissimo bisogno
di hardware per la rete locale: cavi (sia BNC che RJ45), connettori, schede
e hub. La riuscita di Hack-It dipende anche dalla disponibilità dei
partecipanti di mettere in comune, durante i tre giorni, un po'
dell'hardware di cui dispongono.

Logistica
Dormire
Per chi si vuole immergere completamente nell'atmosfera di Hack-It 98, il
CPA mette a disposizione spazi per tende e sacchi a pelo. Essendoci a
disposizione spazi coperti, la tenda non è indispensabile ma può risultare
utile, sia per la comodità, sia per ritagliarsi un angolino di intimità in
cui riporre le proprie cose durante l'immane casino che si prevede durante i
tre giorni.

Purtroppo lo spazio è completamente metropolitano e quindi non aspettarti di
trovare verdi e morbidi praticelli. Quasi sicuramente sarà necessario
dormire sul duro cemento. Un materassino ti permetterà di riportare a casa
la schiena in condizioni accettabili. Considerato il fondo di cemento, fai
attenzione anche al tipo di tenda che hai eventualmente intenzione di usare:
molte tende hanno difficoltà a essere montate senza piantare picchetti.

Se tutto questo ti sembra troppo spartano, puoi ricorrere a pensioni e
alberghi nei dintorni (maggiori informazioni saranno fornite in seguito).

Mangiare
Il CPA ha un'ottima cucina e degli ottimi cuochi. Ci sarà quindi la
possibilità di mangiare in loco a prezzi molto modici. Sono previste cene a
10.000 lire, e forse anche prime colazioni. Sarà inoltre in funzione un bar
interno. Ovviamente non conosciamo ancora i menu dei tre giorni, ma è
probabile che sarà dedicata attenzione anche ai vegetariani. In alternativa,
a due passi dal CPA abbondano pizzerie, ristoranti e supermercati con
cibarie di tutti i tipi.

Servizi
Cessi chimici se va bene, altrimenti bisognerà arrangiarsi con i cessi del
CPA, che sono pochi. Docce non se ne parla nemmeno. Si lava a canna chi ne
ha voglia. Si ricorda a tutti che i veri hackerz disprezzano il corpo e
restano sudici e con le piattole per mesi interi senza accorgersene nemmeno.
Quindi chi darà prova di eccesso di pulizia verrà emarginato, socialmente
disprezzato e sputazzato a vista. Dopo tutto, l'importante è essere puliti
"dentro". :-)

Trasporti
Firenze è luogo noto in ogni angolo del mondo, raggiungibile praticamente
con qualunque mezzo di trasporto (nave esclusa). Il CPA è situato a Firenze
Sud. Indicazioni molto precise su come raggiungere il CPA saranno fornite in
seguito.

Corso di telematica di base
Si rivolge a chi ha già acquisito una dimestichezza di base con l'uso del
personal computer (creazione e gestione di file e cartelle, uso di programmi
applicativi di base come word processor, database e programmi di grafica) e
intende iniziare a utilizzare i servizi offerti dalle reti telematiche. Le
modalità di partecipazione (un'ipotesi è quella di farlo a numero chiuso e
con una quota di iscrizione simbolica di 10.000 lire) e il programma preciso
saranno forniti in seguito.

Corso di crittografia e anonimato in rete
Si rivolge a chi già utilizza le reti telematiche e intende capire meglio
quali sono le possibilità per difendere la propria privacy da occhi
indiscreti, attraverso l'uso di tecniche particolari (come crittazione con
PGP e uso di anonymous remailer). Le modalità di partecipazione (un'ipotesi
è quella di farlo a numero chiuso e con una quota di iscrizione simbolica di
10.000 lire) e il programma preciso saranno forniti in seguito.

Getting started

   * What is Hack-IT 98?

     Hack-IT 98 cannot be defined in one way only. It is an open-air
     festival, a meeting, a hacking party, a pause for reflection, an
     occasion of public learning, an act of rebellion and an exchange of
     ideas, experiences, dreams, utopias and love. What characterises
     Hack-IT 98 is our wish to live these three days completely
     self-organised basing ourselves on our needs. Hack-IT 98 is a
     SELF-ORGANISED event: there are neither organisers nor users, but only
     participants.

   * Where?

     In Italy, in a squat in Florence named C.P.A. (Centro Popolare
     Autogestito, Popular Self-Organised Centre), Viale Giannotti 79,
     Florence. Tel and Fax ++ 39 55 6580151

   * When?

     On Friday 5th, Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th of June, 1998. If you wish
     and if you have time, you can join Hack-IT 98 several days before the
     starting date, in order to help organise the event, install the LAN and
     do whatever might be useful.

   * How?

     How you wish! The C.P.A. offers a large area where you can pleasantly
     spend your days and nights during the meeting. There will be a
     self-organised camping site, so bring your tent and everything you
     might need.

   * How much?

     Do you have to pay to participate to Hack-IT 98? Of course not. Hack-IT
     98 is a no-profit event and nobody will make money out of it. In order
     to cover expenses we will organise a few concerts and other social
     events; to attend these a small fare will be requested. In the
     eventuality that the expenses should be too high, a small subscription
     fee will be requested to all participants.

     Computers and other tools

   * Will we have an Internet connection?

     The answer is almost certainly "yes". Although during Hack-IT 98 people
     are not meant to work on computers or to navigate on the net, we
     believe it is important to be connected at all times. We cannot
     guarantee the quality of the connection (probably some ISDN lines) but
     we hope to give you more information asap.

   * Will we have a LAN?

     Yes! For the LAN question also, we cannot provide you with further
     technical details as everything is still in progress. Most probably the
     LAN will be based on TCP/IP.

   * Will I have computers to work on?

     The answer doesn't depend on us. We can guarantee connectivity and the
     LAN, but have no idea of how many computers will be available. Bring
     your own computer (laptop or not!), your ethernet adapter, your hubs
     and so on. The LAN will be in continual progress! So please read these
     FAQ as often as you can, as the information will be continually
     updated.

   * Can I bring my own computer?

     Of course! It would be an excellent idea if everyone interested in
     using a computer during Hack-IT 98 brings his own. Sheltered tables and
     rooms will be available.

   * What else do I need?

     If you want to connect your computer to the LAN and to the net, you
     will surely need a LAN Adapter. If you don't have one, you can buy one
     for about 30$ in any computer shop. If you want to connect your laptop
     or your non-IBM computer, you will have to spend a little more.

   * May I bring various electronic equipment?

     Of course! You can bring whatever you want: radios, pagers,
     radioscanners, toasters etc. etc. The more you bring with you, the more
     Hack-IT 98 will be fun :-)

     Logistics

   * Where to sleep

     If you want to live the true atmosphere of Hack-IT 98, the C.P.A.
     offers a large area where you can place your tent or sleeping bag. A
     tent is not necessary but useful, both for your comfort and your
     privacy during the event. Unfortunately we are in a metropolitan area,
     so do not expect lawns and greenery. We will have to sleep on the hard
     cement! An inflatable mattress will allow you to go back home without a
     stiff neck! If all this is just too much, you can book a hotel, but it
     will cost you a lot more... A list of hotels will be posted later.

   * Where to eat

     The C.P.A. is known for its good Italian cooking and good-looking
     cooks! You can eat well at the C.P.A. without spending a fortune.
     Special attention will be given to Vegetarians and Vegans. If you don't
     want to eat at the C.P.A., there are many restaurants, pizzerias,
     supermarkets and shops of every kind in the neighbourhood.

   * Services

     WCs and showers will be installed for the event.

   * How to get there

     Florence is - we think - a well-known place. The best way to reach it
     is by train, plane, bus or car (but not by boat!). Detailed information
     on how to reach the C.P.A. will be given later.

     Programme (in progress)

   * Courses

       1. Courses in basic network technology

          For people with average skills in computer usage. The course will
          teach how to use the basic services offered by the most popular
          networks. The course will probably be open to a limited number of
          participants. Information on pre-registration will be given later.

       2. Cryptography and anonimity on the networks

          For people with an average knowledge of network technology. The
          course wishes to show how to defend your privacy by using several
          techniques (cryptography, steganography, PGP, anonymous remailers
          etc). The course will probably be open to a limited number of
          participants. Information on pre-registration will be given later.

   * Workshops

     The backbone of Hack-IT 98 will be a series of self-organised
     workshops. Everybody can propose and carry out his own workshop. All we
     ask is that you inform us as soon as you can what your ideas and
     proposals are. A reminder: most of Hack-IT 98 will be in ItalianŠ Here
     are few proposals for possible workshops:

       1. Knowledge within the Net (by Ferry Byte)

          Knowledge as an instrument of self-defence. Is cryptography just a
          way of protecting privacy, or also a way of protecting copyright?
          Distance learning and distance working in Italy - the exchange of
          knowledge through the net. Guest speakers are: Net Diver, Tommaso
          Tozzi, Arturo di Corinto, The Walrus, Raf Valvola, Zero BBS,
          Stefano Lotti, Anna Carola Freschi

       2. History of information technology (by Renato Pii)

       3. Packet Radio and wireless digital transmissions (by Andrea Bov)
