CD ROM LAUNCH

METABODY: From Cyborg to Symborg
Jeffrey Cook Sam de Silva Gary Zebington
Merlin Integrated Media

THURSDAY 21 AUGUST at 6pm
ARTSPACE Sydney
43 - 51 COWPER WHARF ROAD
WOOLLOOMOOLOO NSW 2011

The Metabody CD ROM examines the territory of the human-machine interface:
the avatar or digital self-representation in cyberspace, the robot or
automata (and now cyborg) through the ages, and the extended body as
performance/installation site connected to other bodies and sites around
the world. The CD ROM also features an archive of the work of Stelarc. It
will be appearing as an installation with muscle analysis hardware at this
year's ISEA97 in Chicago in September.

Merlin Integrated Media is a group of programmers and digital artists who
have come together to collaborate on performances and to provide support to
the arts community. In 1994, the three founding members of Merlin, Jeffrey
Cook, Sam de Silva and Gary Zebington, began collaborating with Australian
performance artist Stelarc, to develop performances that allowed
participation and interaction with audiences locally and globally over the
web.

EXHIBITION OPENING

MOBILITY IN AN ARTIFICIAL CITY
Margie Medlin

OPENING TUESDAY 26 AUGUST at 6pm (runs to AUG 30)
ARTSPACE Sydney

This project originated with the design of an artificial city, constructed
in a computer environment. This imaginary city is positioned on the border
of North America & Mexico, with the following featured locations: the
house, the market place, the border town, the transit zone and the
deportation centre. It represents a complex environment of architectural
spaces and photographic images; where cameras within the computer program
move around and through the models.

The work is continually adjusting the whole space from a playground to a
simple and bold geometry. This quasi built-form, which can be fully
perceived from a single vantage point, challenges the architectural notion
of interior and exterior space, as it is possible to see inside and outside
one image, as interior and exterior blend into a cacophony of space
rearranging itself. The image is not attempting to reach a point of
understanding - it is simply unfolding and collapsing space.

This large-scale process-oriented installation will be projected into the
space using thirty-five 8mm, 16mm and video projectors. This project has
been generously supported by Arts 21 through Arts Victoria and the
Australia Council.
