The whole thing strikes me as utterly irrelevant, except for those
who want to make a career or a business in some arcane layers of art
administration connected to large institutional players.

I think the last time I heard someone say this was in 1995.

The ontological fantasies that used to be connected with top level
domain system in the early days -- that it would be some magic key to
organizing the world and whoever would control the .com domain would,
somehow, control world economy -- are long gone. In an age of search
engines, social push-media and URL shorteners, who cares about these
things anyway.

Really, when was the last time you typed a full URL?

For living art practices outside major institutions, it won't matter
at all if the URL end with .art or or something else.

So, if you do this well, it will create jobs for about 10 people and
some admin hassle for certain institutions. To the rest of the (art)
world, it really will not matter.
