Re: <nettime> ISEA 2011 fees

dear nettime,

i've been reading this fascinating thread for its many underpinnings
and opinions. organizations, ISEA included, need to take
responsibility for their elitism. be elite, or don't be, but do not
pretend that you aren't and then suck the blood of academia because
supposedly your standards and conversation is so high and you have
some kind of credentialism to hand out. (or, credit-alism.)

is ISEAs fee structure a way to exclude, and in its exclusion a
remapping of the boundaries of electronic art and who the artists are
via this dubious process of out-pricing many academics and artists?

to me it is a waste of time to create a parallel-"because-we- could-
not afford it"online conversation, wiki and "open" or not, if the
conversation wants to replace the experience of "really being there"
at ISEA. (quotes for emphasis) perhaps any non-location based
conversation should focus upon issues of segregation, exclusion, lack
of funding for creative digital research. perhaps nonparticipants
should look at their own geography. who would be coming from where?
is it US artists unable to go? poor turkish hackers? who and where,
and what departments? if electronic art should not be paid for, in
terms of its participation, why not? how could it be made accessible?
does it only circulate among privatized institutions already? how
could the off site conversation of the disgruntled make meaning out of
electronic art that ISEA can't?
