<nettime> Volleyball Wars - Revival of Hate Speech in Serbia |
http://www.mediaonline.ba/en/?ID=358 While the war between Croatia and Serbia is long over, the fights between sports fans are just as fierce as they were in the beginning of the 1990s. But then, British soccer fans do not change their proneness to violence with generations, either. What is different in Serbia is the behavior of the media. Unlike in Britain (or in Croatia) the media in Serbia became a mouthpiece for such behavior - to an extent advocating and promoting it, just as they did in the 1990-s, when that was indeed a common practice among all state-run media in all post-Yugoslav societies. This time around Serbian media are doing it from purely opportunistic standpoint: hate speech sells well. But it is incendiary, it can poison the relations among post- Yugoslav countries, and, therefore needs to be stopped. ivo --------------------------------------------------------- Ivo Skoric 19 Baxter Street Rutland VT 05701 802.775.7257 ivo@balkansnet.org balkansnet.org # distributed via <nettime>: no commercial use without permission # <nettime> is a moderated mailing list for net criticism, # collaborative text filtering and cultural politics of the nets # more info: majordomo@bbs.thing.net and "info nettime-l" in the msg body # archive: http://www.nettime.org contact: nettime@bbs.thing.net
