I'm new to this list, so appols in advance for any
faux-pas that might be caused by my not having read lots
of archives or spent very long lurking...

I agree with Stefan Merten, I think that it is a new mode
of production and I also think it is a post-capitalist
mode of production and it is the crystalisation of this
mode of production and the resulting clearer picture of
the form that a new society could take that is one of the
key reasons (perhaps _the_ key reason) behind the
qualitive change in the nature of the period we are now in
- -- it appears to me that this is now late capitalism, for
this reason.

If people haven't see Raoul's document, "Free Software and
Market Relations" on the Oekonux site it's worth looking
at -- it contains a very good rebuttal of the arguments
that free software is going to be / is being subsumed by
capital:

I don't want to spoil the fun for everyone but I bet a
google will turn the source up... I just grepped a mirror
of a particular site I host for the answer and although I
didn't guess the exact book I did guess the author before
grepping :-)
