The early days of modernism were full of art that celebrated the power of 
technology.  The Eiffel Tower was an early example of technology-as-art, and 
the Futurists would have been delighted with genetic engineering.  But 
perhaps some of today's artists have forgotten what happened to that early, 
giddy optimism about machines: it was crushed by the harsh realities of two 
world wars.  I hope a similar rude awakening about the dangers of genetic 
engineering isn't in store for us.
