At the time of New Year 2003 we create a server-list on < free.fr >.
This server of election does not propose online archive of the messages, you
will thus have to save them by your own means those which will interest you.
Why we experienced a list, yet another ?
Following requests repeated for one year, then with recommendations of
corresponding foreigners lately, we have decided to launch it for the
following reasons:
1. our singular ideas regarding emergence, generally don't match the topics
of the other lists;
2. cultural lists and artistic lists do not accept any more the
communication of virtual events after various abuses.
However we owe to that virtual space of the internet, our singular existence
as editors and producers, that supports the development of our
demonstrations offline...
We make a point of defending the free principle of publication and creation
in field of the hypermedia and consequently the communication of its events.
Such is the double object of our list, based on the principle of the
critical alterity
(non-Community and thema-anachronistic like actual).
Here are some topics and minimal rules to make the discussion more
interactive and more fluid:
This list, both of information and thinking, of sociocultural visions or
engagements of critical universes rather that opinions, includes the
political and economic universes.
It is opened in to criticism and to self-criticism, with the aim of ironic
joyful prospective, researches, performances, events, including the most
political.
Nevertheless, no insult neither obscenity is authorised regarding both
internal listers and external people, neither on the list nor under the
links which are published there.
Within the same framework, the list would not put up with repetitive
aggressions which could take the aspect of harassing, as well with regard to
the ones as with that of the others
Frequency of the messages and Spam:
to limit the abuses in a number of posts, a maximum of emission of two mails
by lister, and per day is authorised, except concerning basic discussions on
fertile subjects.
Beyond two posts or of a demonstration of impatience of one or two fellow
candidates, the exchanges in progress will have to continue within the
framework of private mails.
The referential links or quotations inside the development of the contents
of the messages will be expressed without limitation of their frequency nor
of their number.
On the other hand, the promotional or advertising communication of sites or
pages being able to be associated to Spam will take place only one time per
week for each lister. These mails will have to mention : <journal> in the
title.
Moderation:
The moderation will be shared between five persons considering their
disciplinary fields included musics and sciences, but all practise the same

This one semester full time or two semester part-time degree provides
a meeting point for practitioners from diverse disciplinary
backgrounds. The program enables researchers to develop projects
within a lively transdisciplinary research culture that has a digital
+ architectural orientation. Weekly seminars, workshops, and research
events enable participants to investigate relations between emergent
practices, technologies and the intensifications of the information
age. The transdisciplinary emphasis draws attention to movements
across logics, systems and senses. The program structure enables
contact with a range of celebrated practitioners, supporting research
through access to both expertise and sophisticated facilities.
Applications are invited from a wide variety of disciplinary
backgrounds, including Film, Computer Science, Architecture, Fashion,
Sound, Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Performance, Multimedia,
Robotics, Photography, Engineering, Biological Science... amongst
many others.
This program occurs within the Spatial Information Architecture
Laboratory, a digital research facility in the School of Architecture

DESIGN INSTITUTE INVITES PROPOSALS FOR KNOWLEDGE MAPS OF TWIN CITIES
$6000 FELLOWSHIPS OFFERED TO INTERDISCIPLINARY DESIGN/RESEARCH TEAMS
In 2003, the University of Minnesota Design Institute will host the TWIN
CITIES DESIGN CELEBRATION (TCDC), a multi-faceted program of design
commissions, publications, symposia and public events, held with generous
support from Target Corporation.
The mission of the TCDC is to create a series of events and activities that
enable the public - both residents and visitors - to see and experience the
Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St Paul from new perspectives, and
participate in shaping their future as a creative metropolis. These
case-study projects in the Twin Cities will demonstrate how design can
enhance urban culture and stimulate economic development, showcasing 'Design
Central USA' and yielding insights applicable to other U.S. cities.
As a key component of the Twin Cities Design Celebration, the Design
Institute plans to commission and publish a series of Knowledge Maps of the
Twin Cities.
For the purposes of this project, a Knowledge Map is defined as an original
depiction of a body of data, arranged to reveal new insights into a given
physical or conceptual territory. It articulates a distinct polemical
position on that territory and opens up discussion of its future (re)design
and (re)interpretation.
In contrast with regular tourist maps - which are primarily designed to
facilitate consumption of a city's touristic or commercial 'highlights'
(such as historic homes or restaurants) - the TCDC Knowledge Maps will offer
alternative readings of the Twin Cities, making observations and
connections, and posing questions about their socio-economic, industrial,
demographic and environmental attributes. Further details will be provided
in the Knowledge Maps Request for Proposals (see below).
Fellowship honoraria of $6,000 will be offered to each of nine
interdisciplinary teams, comprising writers/researchers and at least one
graphic designer, for the editorial development and design of Knowledge Maps
that chart aspects of everyday life activity in the context of the Twin
Cities. Currently enrolled students are also eligible to apply.
Production of the TCDC Knowledge Maps will be underwritten by the Design
Institute, for publication in summer 2003, in time for the Twin Cities
Design Celebration 'peak week' of public programming in early September
2003, when a specially commissioned mass-participation Urban Game will also
have its debut.
HOW TO APPLY:
To receive the TCDC Knowledge Maps Request for Proposals and additional TCDC
background information, submit a Letter of Intent to participate and a
filing fee, enclosing a check or International Money Order for US $30 made
payable to the University of Minnesota Design Institute. These must be
received at the Design Institute by January 27, 2003, and include:
* Name of team leader, with phone number, email and mailing address for
correspondence
* Name, email, and telephone numbers of each additional team member
* one sentence biography per team member

Established in 2002, the Amsterdam Masters is a unique two year program
aimed at the facilitation of high quality research into the relationship
between choreography, performance, and new media/ emerging technologies.
The program combines traditional and innovative approaches including
taught
courses, individual study, peer-to-peer contexts for discussion and
debate,
reflexive documentation and practice/ studio based research.
The program's emphasis is to develop strong and sophisticated
choreographic
work, extending and testing the boundaries of choreographic practice,
application and thought; at the same time to engage in theoretical/
critical discourse and a practical overview of relevant current and
emerging technologies. Subsequently, students will develop their own
research examining the relationships between these; involving varying
degrees of collaboration and the making of work in a variety of new
media
contexts.
With cultural organisations such as STEIM, Waag Society, Montevideo
and V2; the Netherlands has one of the most active new media/ emerging
technology arts scenes in Europe. The Amsterdam Masters aims to
facilitate
and coordinate interaction and collaboration within this context as well
as
abroad.
The Amsterdam Masters in Choreography is managed in part within the
context
of Dance Unlimited, a collaboration with the Dance Academies of
Rotterdam and
Arnhem, offering the students opportunity to follow modules in each of
these
three places.
The Amsterdam Masters accepts only four new students per year
which means that access to facilities and staff is optimal.
The program is ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS NOW for September 2003.

The day of the final proofreading. The printer is in Shimurasakaue,
and although this is conveniently located on the Mita line that
takes me there directly from Denenchofu, it's a relatively long
journey. Perfect for reading, so on the train I finish the 11th
volume of Inose Naoki's anthology "Nippon Bonjinden." I love this
one. I guess it was in my highschool days when I was paralyzed by
a shrewd interview with Inose in "Studio Voice" magazine. I could
imagine that the scenery of the interview itself must have been
pretty tough, and I also admired the enthusiasm with which former
editor Sayama Ichiro put together the article (with not a single
"(laughs)" in it). I tried a couple of times to make similar
interviews, but without success. Sayama's whole concept of
magazine-making was and still is admirably unconventional, ignoring
celebrities and rather pulling 'ordinary people' into the limelight.

Happy New Everyone! 2003 is finally here and the SANGANDAAN international
conference and cultural festival is 7 months away. (yikes!)
The January 15 deadline for the submissions of proposals for papers for the
SANGANDAAN 2003 International Conference draws near. Below or attached is
the guidelines for those considering.
For those who have already submitted both proposal and c.v./bio, thank you
very much.
For those who submitted a proposal but not a brief bio or c.v., please tell
us a little bit about yourself and send to the reviewers listed in the
enclosed guidelines.
For those whose voices should be heard at this conference but have not
submitted a proposal and c.v., please send both. Remember the focus is on
the arts and media in relation to US-Philippine relations.

Filipino American National Historical Society-East Bay and more
Sangandaan 2003 is a cultural commemoration that highlights the arts and
media produced by Filipinos, Americans and Filipino-Americans in the course
of Philippine-US relations from 1899 to 2002. The cultural commemoration
will
be held in the Philippines on July 6-30, 2003 under the sponsorship of the
University of the Philippines, the Cultural Center of the Philippines and
the
San Francisco State University, in collaboration with numerous public and
private institutions in the Philippines such as the National Commission for
Culture and the Arts, the National Historical Institute, the National
Library, the National Museum, the Metropolitan Museum, Ateneo de Manila
University, and De La Salle University, and in the United States such as the
City College of San Francisco..
The Sangandaan 2003 activities will commence with the opening ceremonies at
the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), Manila, followed by
an international conference at the University of the Philippines. Exhibits
and performances in the Quezon City area will complement the Conference in
the first week. The theatre productions, dance performances, concerts, film
and broadcast series, exhibits, literary events and culinary events in the
second week will be held in the Manila Bay area. The commemoration will
conclude with an outreach program.

Conference Goal
To commemorate one hundred years of Philippine-American relations, the
conference will confront, understand, and come to terms with the fact of
American colonization in order to hasten the processes of decolonization and
nation-building in the Philippines, on the one hand; and the creation of a
strong identity and galvanization of all Filipino-Americans into a dynamic
force in the United States, on the other.
Conference Objectives
Within the perspective of reflexivity for empowerment, Filipino, American
and
Filipino-American academics and cultural workers now come together to:
1. examine the arts and media produced by Filipinos, Americans, and
Filipino-Americans during the processes of colonization and decolonization
both in the Philippines and the United States in the last one hundred years;
and
2. explore the ways by which the arts and media produced by Filipinos and
Filipino-Americans can utilize the legacies of colonization so that Filipino
and Filipino-Americans can strengthen their own cultural identities and
thereby empower themselves as persons and as citizens of their respective
nations.
Conference Guidelines
1. The Conference will highlight the arts and media produced by Filipinos,
Americans and Filipino-Americans in connection with:
˙ the annexation of the Philippines, and Filipino resistance to American
occupation at the turn of the century;
˙ the Americanization of Filipino culture and the impact of Philippine
culture on the
American way of life;
˙ Filipino imitation, rejection, assimilation or transformation of elements
from
American culture during and after the American colonial period;
˙ the Filipino diaspora and the expression of rights of Filipinos and
Filipino-Americans
in the US in the last century, and
˙ the continuing definition and affirmation of Filipino cultural identities
both in the
Philippines and in the United States.
2. Paper writers may come from different disciplines and may use varied
approaches for their study of arts, media or other cultural forms which may
include among others:
˙ the literary arts (oral and written, poetry or prose)
the performing arts (music, dance, theatre, or combinations thereof)
˙ the visual arts (indigenous and indigenized, traditional arts, plastic and
graphic
arts, photography, fashion)
˙ urban planning and public arts (monuments, historical markers, parks,
historical
sites, streets, museums)
˙ architecture (domestic and public, vernacular and formal)
˙ print media (newspapers, magazines, journals, comics, and alternative
publications)
˙ radio (news programs, dramas, musical variety shows, special features)
˙ television (news, dramas, music and dance programs, talk shows,
documentaries, and other features)
˙ film and video (narrative, documentary, experimental, and others),
˙ culinary arts and
˙ multimedia arts
3. Papers may focus on single or comparative themes and may delve into
questions
involving media and art works, artistic styles and movements, artists and
media persons, audiences, patronage, genre of arts and media, venues, media
or arts education, cultural heritage and conservation, cultural promotion,
media or arts institutions, media, arts and government, and other related
topics.
The NEW deadline for paper abstracts is January 15, 2003.
Writers of accepted abstracts will be notified by January 30, 2003. The

Subject: Digital Printmaking position
The University at Albany, State University of New York, has opened a
search for an Assistant Professor of Digital Printmaking. Full-time,
tenure track, starting August 2003. MFA or equivalent required. Three
years teaching experience at college level preferred and professional
exhibition record. The candidate should have expertise in intaglio,
lithography and digital media and demonstrate a broad-based
interdisciplinary approach to printmaking. Responsibilities include
managing the intaglio/lithography area and combining traditional
printmaking with emerging technologies. Related responsibilities
include comittee participation, advising undergraduates and serving on
the graduate committee. Salary competitive. Position contingent on
final budget approval. Submit letter of application, curriculum vita,
