FINAL ANNOUNCEMENT FOR CALL FOR PAPERS

user_mode
= emotion + intuition in art + design

an international symposium and festival
9 - 11 May 2003
Tate Modern
London, UK

A collaboration between Central Saint Martins College of Art & Design
<http://www.csm.linst.ac.uk/> and Tate Modern <http://www.tate.org.uk>

user_mode is an international, multidisciplinary symposium looking at
interactive art and design practices. It will examine one of the key
concerns for many creative practitioners - engaging the emotions of the
audience/user.

Artists, designers and critics frequently refer to "emotional engagement".
What is meant by this? Is it immersion, rapture, agency, reflection? This
question is crucial to interactive art and design practice where the user's
response is sensitive to context and can not only influence the form and
content of the work but also, in some cases, the future direction of
technological development. user_mode will aim to locate techniques,
instruments, contexts and terms to provide clearer insight into this theme.

user_mode will provide an opportunity to hear from internationally renowned
artists, designers and theorists as well as emerging practitioners. It is
intended that concerts, performances and drop-in studios featuring artists,
designers, architects, researchers and technicians informally presenting
works in progress will complement presentations and panel discussions.

Key contributors include: Gary Hill (Artist), Sara Diamond (Director, Media
and Visual Arts Banff, Canada), Stuart Jones
(composer/performer/interactive sound artist based in the UK), Lev Manovich
(New Media theorist), David Ross (Director of the Beacon project New York,
and formerly Director of San Francisco Museum of Modern Art and The Whitney
Museum of American Art) and Tobi Schneidler (Architect, Interactive
Institute, Stockholm)

___user_mode : thematics

How do you engage and sustain the interest of the user/visitor/player in an
interactive experience whether it be reflexive architecture, interactive
film, art installation, responsive environment, computer games,
performance, product, communication or experience design?

Questions for discussion may include: does interactivity promise a more
profound experience than more traditional responses to art and design? What
does it add? How is it measured? Does interactive work offer more than
conventional cinema, theatre, painting or architecture in emotional terms?
Is there more sense of participation?

user_mode will seek to identify models of emotional engagement, aiming to
question, extend and rework the most topical of the categories outlined
below:

- - Emotion as content or theme of the work
- - Emotion as agency and control
- - Emotion as subjective experience
- - Emotion as a cognitive and physical process
- - Emotion as an element of discovery learning in interactive exhibitions
- - Emotion and navigation in architecture
- - Emotion and narrative in film
- - Emotion and gaming
- - Emotion in sound composition and audio environments

Subject: Extended Vacancy Professorship Computer Visualisation

Dear reader,

Please find below an extended vacancy for a position of Professor Computer
Visualisation at the Frank Mohr Institute. Learning from questions in the
first round, we like to highlight some aspects of the profile that are
important to us.

We ask the applicant to have a thorough understanding of the computational
aspect of visualisation, especially in the algorithmic image and sound
generation.
The applicant needs to be able to translate scientific and technological
knowledge into art practice, therefore s/he will most likely be an
artist/designer. 'Pure' scientists or artists are strongly discouraged to
apply. To bring the field forward in the future, we believe in a breed of
artists/designers that know both sides of the coin equally well; art/design
on the one and science/computation on the other.

Hopefully we grabbed your attention.

Petri Leijdekkers
Director Frank Mohr Institute

EXTENDED VACANCY PROFESSOR COMPUTER VISUALISATION AT THE FRANK MOHR
INSTITUTE, HANZEHOGESCHOOL GRONINGEN, THE NETHERLANDS

The Frank Mohr Institute (FMI, www.mohr-i.nl) is the Institute for Advanced
Studies and Research in the Arts and New Media within the Faculty of Arts o=
f
the Hanzehogeschool Groningen. In cooperation with the University of
Groningen, the FMI accommodates three master's programmes: MFA IME
(Interactive Media & Environments), MFA Painting and MFA Scenography. In
addition, the institute offers an international programme of courses in the
field of new media for graduate students, artists, designers and business
employees.
The FMI works with the University of Groningen (Faculty of Arts and the
Centre for High Performance Computing & Visualisation) and the Groninger
Museum on the Art and Media Cooperative Platform providing education and
research at the level of Masters and Post-Masters.
As of 1 January 2003 the FMI is being expanded with a Professorship in
Computer Visualisation. The board of the Faculty of Arts would therefore
like to fill as soon as possible the position of

PROFESSOR IN COMPUTER VISUALISATION
man or woman, 0.6 fractional appointment, vacancy number 2002-5.08

BACKGROUND
Visualisation and computability will play an increasingly important role in
future communication processes, design, art, interactive environments,
theatre and scientific projects. Visualisation is thus a significant factor
in all fields where translating into a visible form is important for
processes and results. The image in a wide sense - that is to say, moving
and static - recorded in a multimedia context or combined with theatre or
music, is the focus of communication processes that are supported or
realised with the aid of digital techniques.

POSITION IN THE ORGANISATION
The professor presides over the studies of participants from the
Hanzehogeschool Groningen, the University of Groningen and the business
world, works closely with the director of the Frank Mohr Institute and is
accountable to the Faculty board.

FIELD OF KNOWLEDGE AND TASKS OF THE PROFESSOR
The professor's field of knowledge is computer visualisation. We make a
distinction between:
- - Visualisation of data and information: graphic representation of
measurements and research data and the designing of virtual environments fo=
r
use in education and research.
- - Visualisation of concepts and meaning: primary images that carry
meaning and which, as representation or computer art (algorithmic image
generation with purely artistic aims), are consequently intended to play an
emphatic role in communicational processes.
The tasks of the professor are as follows:
- - organising an infrastructure of existing knowledge and facilities
within the Hanzehogeschool and the University of Groningen relevant to
computer visualisation;
- - marking and structuring the research field of computer visualisation
within the Frank Mohr Institute and the envisaged Cooperative Platform for
Art and Media;
- - providing instruction at undergraduate and postgraduate levels within
the Faculty of Arts and the Cooperative Platform;
- - developing and supervising of a circle of knowledge and a programme of
research;=20
- -    exemplary research;
- - contributing (structurally) to the development and implementation of
media education and research at the undergraduate level within the Faculty
and courses of higher education, particularly the MFA Interactive Media &
Environments;
- - advising business projects and start-up companies in the field of
visualisations;=20
- -    representation in national and international joint ventures;
- - initiating a documentation centre and library of knowledge for compute=
r
visualisation;
- - organising at least one international symposium and other activities
where the research and development results of the professor and the circle
of knowledge are publicly tested and disseminated.

PROFILE AND COMPETENCE
The professor should possess both practical and scientific knowledge and
experience in the field of art and media, and to have a doctoral degree or
to have established his/her authority in the field of knowledge in another
way. He or she commands extensive and up-to-date knowledge of and experienc=
e
with the visual domain and a thorough understanding of the
computational aspect of visualisation, especially in the algorithmic image
and sound generation. A demonstrable international reputation and a network
in the field of computer visualisation are required.
The professor we are seeking is a good organiser, is demonstrably able to
provide guidance, to communicate, stimulate and convey knowledge.
Competence is required in: coaching and professional leadership, enterprise=
,
vision, power of persuasion, presentation, organisational sensibility,
independence, results-orientation, planning and organising.

WE OFFER
The appointment commences march 1st 2003 or as soon as practically feasible=
.
The position of professor is established for 4 years. After two years an
evaluation takes place. Appointment is conditional upon the labour
agreements for the higher education sector. The salary scale is 16, with a
minimum of AC 4.487,- and a maximum of AC 6.365,- per month for a standar=
d
full-time post. The appointed professor holds a chair at the University of
Groningen.

Subject: WTC design notes w/images (2/2)

[BCC'd to architects involved in the latest WTC proposals]

  This e-mail culminates the general feedback from the
  newest WTC planning proposals for redevelopment.
  In the Long Notes, each proposal was evaluated in
  terms of its positive and potentially negative aspects,
  in addition to what the proposals shared in common.
  It can be found online in the Design-List archives [1].

  First, a bullet list of short notes is presented, followed
  by a visual critique of 'the reinvention of the skyscraper'
  with respect to the former WTC site, known as ground-
  zero. It compares what the WTC was like on the site,
  with the proposals, and asks a general question about
  the utility/ability of very-tall buildings, as a typology on
  this specific site, to be able to convey intended meaning.
  A hybrid architecture, developed using the most innovative
  aspects from each WTC proposal, is proposed as counter-
  point to the skyscraper typology, with the addition of the
  'skyscraper' as a dual-use linking device, benefiting
  inter-building safety and multi-zoned programming. [2]

===========================================
I. general design issues: towards hybrid architectures
===========================================

* idea of linking many buildings into one
* WTC footprints proportional to buildings
* collaborative, many architects/architectures
* open development/open architectural design
* skyways used for safety and city networking
* mid-height buildings better for viewing footprints
* park extends around WTC building footprints
* new buildings around the periphery of site
* corner placement/directionality of site plan
* design below-grade, at-grade, above-grade
* phased zoning, from memorial/park outward
* above ground promenade/walkway/bridges
* mid-sized buildings with introverted crowns
* skyways/skybridges for inter-building transit/safety
* mixed-use zoning/programs across multiple buildings
* memorial above/below ground voids, translucent pools
* ramp element symbolic, related to procession
* sustainable design with light, wind, water
* landscaping of both inner/outer environments
* public park amphitheater as cultural place
* wilderness park structurally elevated above site
* transformative development, over time/decades

===========================================
II. sections & elevations of new hybrid architectures
===========================================

[Preface: using a mouse and Photoshop LE seemed the
easiest way to share these ideas. Thus, they are not very
precise in terms of scale or precision, but are approximate
to the question of the WTC site, and the recent proposals.
This general exercise was undertaken to demonstrate how
traditional skyscrapers relate to an openly-wounded site,
and its intimate embrace and regeneration, versus that of
an impersonal scale of modernistic machine proportions.]

- ------------------------------------------
At this point, to sum up the above examples, the effort to place a
very tall building on the site tends to create a 'peak' as a central
focus, and the scale tries to match that of the former WTC towers.
A general strategy is found when placing buildings on the outer
edge of the site, with a below ground memorial. Transparency in
the building allows the rest of the city to enter into the site. Bridges
allow communal aspects between buildings on the site in addition
to safety aspects. The 'crowns' or tops of medium-sized buildings
that slope in towards the site bring focus to the memorial below.

Yet, it is the skyscraper buildings which dominate the memorial
site, and if sectional space were air, there is little of it to breath.
If one were to stand below these 1000 foot structures, on the site
and look up from a memorial, it would be a sense of imposition
and the relation of an individual to a modern architecture of steel,
glass, and technology, not of humans and the tragedy of 9/11,
which should be the focus. Not the skyscraper as building type.
Therefore it is proposed that in mixing these positive elements,
a hybrid architecture could be proposed which approximates
how these different elements might work together for a unique
collaboratively designed architecture, where many architects
and architectures, developers, planners, and engineers can
work together in an open architectural development, working
in the realm of sketches and improvisation, to ask questions...]

buildings, small-medium buildings directionally step backward
around periphery of the site, keeping the site empty, preparing
it as a giant volumetric square... walkway bridges street traffic...

l) hybrid: buildings around the immediate site are also related to it
<http://home.earthlink.net/~aetherica/hybrid/hybridsectionelevation.gif>

m) hybrid: employing 'skyways/skybridges' [2] for safety, transport,
and commerce, the different buildings and communities around the
site link together as a network city, offering new zoning
possibilities...

n) network city: the new city as network grows through new linkages...

o) network city: over time, these structural links transform the city...

p) network city: decentralized zoning/building programs develops...
where buildings/people are networked together w/others elsewhere...

q) hybrid architecture: an elevated multi-tiered city-park of roof
gardens...
linking into larger networks and park systems using inside/outside
paths...

r) skyline: night view of the network city and its hybrid architecture,
using strips of light in common on buildings, new and old, to glow
with a light regenerated in the valley, a city becomes a skyscraper...

s) the symbolic WTC, a memory to many, now memorialized...

t) skyline: the below-ground memorial voids glow with light through
translucent pools, on overcast nights faintly touching clouds above...

- ------------------------------------------
It is possible that by questioning the skyscraper as a building type,
just as with other highly-centralized planning systems, that an
inversion of this traditional model, in a decentralized network that
links together various buildings, could approach the issues which
are to be addressed in a multi-community,-phased, -zoned, -designed
redevelopment plan for the ground-zero memorial and surrounding
area, with economic, social, and cultural factors of highest importance.

Please consider the hybrid architecture model as an alternative to the
skyscrapers that are ubiquitous in your designs and future decisions.
It is a sketch, a question, not an answer. It does not seek to fill-in
places
already full with meaning, but to revere a special place build around
it.
