We expect the project to produce an open atmosphere for critical discourse, and an on-going debate regarding the raised issues. The idea of this sixth edition of SEAFair is to investigate the cultural transformation in the beginning of the 21st century by critically examining in an overall platform the evolution of consciousness, society, networks, and new media. The study of consciousness is now considered to be one of the top themes in artistic and cultural circles especially because current research of broad fields in a cultural and a social sense may assist us in the visualizing of our future. The main theme of the Symposium will be CULTURE AND CONSCIOUSNESS. Themes such as the influence of techno-scientific change upon society, the study of consciousness, the study of the mind, etc. will be examined. Preservation of Video Tapes Torben Soeborg (dk) Danish Video Art Data Bank Museen fuer zeitgenoessische Kunst sammeln in zunehmendem Masse Installationen, die unterschiedliche Medien verwenden. Tapestry - Software William Ross, Victoria Ward (uk) Tapestry Tapestry is a collaborative storytelling system: it weaves a compound narrative out of the disparate fragments entered by its inhabitants, splicing and combining narrative steps to build a single navigable mass of story. Anyone is free to contribute, discuss and one day take responsibility for part of the weave. The original purpose of the project was to find an effective way of gathering and presenting eyewitness testimony. How to gather firsthand material from remote and how to make that material engaging, informative and useful to both the researcher and the casual passer-by without relying on editorial expertise. The system is used by several sites to gather and discuss evidence of human rights violations, climate change and other media-unfriendly issues. - The workshop will be followed by a presentation of the Tapestry-powered website wastun.org with Florian Schneider, The Yesmen, and others, in the transmediale salon. Will Ross has a portfolio that stretches from British Telecom's corporate social responsibility unit to the decidedly anticorporate mcspotlight.org. Victoria Ward is with Sparknow, a small and irreverent Knowledge Management consultancy that mixes corporate, voluntary and public sector work. www.spanner.org/tapestry Workshop: Tapestry - Software Sunday, 2 February 2003 / 14.00 - 19.00 hrs, K3 ************************************************** 4. Workshop participants will explore the concept of programming as a means of creation through writing programs for images, movement, and behavior. We will be using the Proce55ing environment for writing the software. Proce55ing is an open project initiated by Ben Fry and Casey Reas. Developed at Interaction Design Institute Ivrea, Aesthetics and Computation Group at the MIT Media Lab. www.proce55ing.net Workshop: Proce55ing Monday, 3 February 2003, 14.00 - 19.00 hrs, K3 ************************************************** 5. Preservation of Video Tapes Torben Soeborg (dk) Danish Video Art Data Bank More and more museums for contemporary art are collecting installations in which various media are used. These acquisitions are surrounded by considerable problems. Which aspects play a role in the conservation and re-installation of multi media installations? What are the criteria for preservation and re-installation? Is there a need for more technical know-how to ensure that these installations can also be presented in the future? How can installations be registered and documented? Without solutions, a number of these works will, in the long term, have to be given up as lost. Video and graphic artist Torben Soeborg of the Danish Video Art Data Bank examines the problems with preserving the immaterial variable media and more specific the conservation of works on old video tapes. He put forward proposals for both "passive" and active" actions and questions for discussion about what can be done? - and what should be done? Wireless Networks Lars Aronsson (se) Community Wireless Networking There is a now widespread belief that access to the Internet increasingly will use wireless technology in homes, offices, schools, and public spaces. As access to the Internet becomes an increasingly important part of our daily cultural, economic and social lives, international initiatives are arising that aim to put these new communication technologies in the hands of local communities. Elektrosmog, an online discussion group based in Stockholm, is one of the most important of these new organizations dedicated to public, wireless Internet access. Lars Aronsson will give a lecture and lead a discussion on the cultural and social implications of these new wireless technologies as well as provide an overview of current Swedish projects. Lars Aronsson is computer scientist and programmer. He founded Elektrosmog in 2000. www.elektrosmog.nu Workshop: Wireless Networks Tuesday 4 February 2003 / 14.00 - 19.00 hrs, K3 ************************************************** 7. Ogg/Vorbis and Open Media Standards Adam Hyde (nz/nl/gb) Ogg/Vorbis and Open Media Standards OggVorbis is a new open standard audio compression format designed to replace existing proprietary, patented formats. Vorbis is different from existing proprietary formats in that it is completely free, open and unpatented. Developed as part of the Ogg project, OggVorbis is part of a larger initiative currently being undertaken to create a fully open multimedia system. This workshop will introduce the format, focusing on both technical specifics (compression, encoding/decoding, listening comparisons between competing formats) as well as the philosophical and legal issues underpinning open media standards and initiatives. Adam Hyde is a new media artist and musician. He has a special interest in streaming media, in both visual and audio contexts. www.radioqualia.net Workshop: Ogg/Vorbis and Open Media Standards Wednesday 5 February 2003 / 14.00 - 19.00 hrs, K3 ************************************************** 8. Weitere Informationen zu Programm und Gästen, Eintrittspreisen und Veranstaltungsorten findet Ihr auf unserer Website http://www.filmwinter.de Cheers, Wanda +*+*+*+*+* Dear friends of the Stuttgart Filmwinter, just before x-mas, I want to announce the upcoming 16th Stuttgart Filmwinter - Festival for Expanded Media. The event starts with a Warm Up from January 9 on with various exhibitions and programmes. The festival itself takes place from January 16-19 at the Stuttgart Filmhaus and the Ex-IKEA (former IKEA-building). >From 1300 submissions in the field von short film and video, media installation, CD-ROM and Internet the selection committees have selected the outstanding works. In the special programmes we feature a video retrospective of Erwin Wurm. Under the catchwork "Erdung" (Grounding) we have compiled works and organized lectures which deals with the "new feeling of attachment to one's home town". Which roles inhere geographical and emotional places in today's media society? Is there a corrective to the trends of mobilization, flexploitation, and globalization? And does this mean we are returning to traditional value systems, implying expressions such as "home" and "roots"? The programme "Gegenspieler" (counterplots) deals with "Machinimas" and subversive narration in computer games. After several years of manipulating sounds inside his laptop, osso bucco has brought his music to the people with performances at the Sonar Festival and Wrong Festival in Barcelona and the Nursery Summer Festival in Stockholm. His music weaves back and forth between ambient noise and digital harmony, which appears to be the focus of the compositions. The textures he creates from overlapping repetitive, DSP clicks and processed layers of sounds provide the backdrop to the subtle melodies. In December, one of his tracks will appear on the Wrong Festival Compilation cd with Hrvatski, Dj Rupture and Once11.
