Currently, I am working on a book about community media. By community media, I refer to grassroots or locally oriented media access initiatives predicated on a profound sense of dissatisfaction with mainstream media form and content, dedicated to the principles of free expression and participatory democracy, and committed to preserving of local cultural autonomy and promoting community solidarity. This book consists of original research on four different geographic communities making use of four discrete technologies (radio, television, newspaper, and computer networks) for purposes of community communication. This volume seeks to demonstrate community media's social, political, and cultural relevance in an increasingly global media environment. In addition to these case studies, I hope to construct a substantive, but by no means comprehensive overview of community media around the world. To that end, I am seeking contact information for researchers and practitioners with first-hand knowledge of community media organizations. Specifically, I would like to establish a working relationship with anyone who has an abiding theoretical and/or practical interest in the day-to-day operations of community media organizations. If you or someone you know is interested in lending research assistance or serving as an informant for this project, please contact me off the list. Sincerely, KH --- Kevin Howley <khowley@lynx.dac.neu.edu> Assistant Professor Department of Communication Studies Northeastern University 139 Holmes Hall Boston, MA 02115 Tel. (G. C.). Film festivals for your Sony hand-held? Novels for your cell-phone? Net.art for your Palm? There have been many interesting projects in the last few years dealing with portable technologies. Most of these projects address in some way with the transmission and reception of data as an integral part of an art experience that takes place in a physical, public space. If you have done or heard about a project or conference that seems to follow along these lines, I would love to hear about it! I have started to gather information and have heard from many of you, but am very interested in hearing more from everyone. I have just finished putting together an exhibition of Screen Savers as public art (www.ArtMuseum.net, Stanford University Museum of Art, Viper Festival) and am very interested in the art implications of portables, both as an artist, and as a person interested in creating shows and bringing artists together. From the discussions on Nettime and elsewhere, it seems many people are also very interested. The discussions so far seem to be productive and asking good questions. I have enjoyed hearing about WAP and phone ideas and questions. I have no further details yet available on an exhibition - this is just a call for information. Thank you for your help in information gathering! Looking forward to hearing from you.
