<nettime> EU states "expel" 170,000 by air in 1999

EXCLUSIVE REPORT: EU STATES EXPEL 170,000 BY AIR IN 
1999

According to a report by the Council of the European Union's 
Migration and Expulsion Working Party, 166,909 people were 
deported by plane from the member states and Norway during 
1999. 

The UK, with over 45,000 air expulsions, accounts for for some 
27% of the total. (The report did not consider expulsions carried out 
by other means - such as people expelled at the EU's borders with 
central and Eastern Europe.) Figures are given for each of the 15 
member states, plus Iceland and Norway.

An analysis of the report is published today by Statewatch. It also
considers the role of deportation "escorts" (immigration officials or
police officers) in the member states, EU cooperation measures 
relating to expulsion, and group expulsions by charter flight.

EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT VOTES IN FAVOUR OF LEGAL 
ACTION OVER THE "SOLANA DECISION" ON PUBLIC ACCESS 
TO EU COUNCIL DOCUMENTS

On Wednesday (13.9.00) the Legal Affairs and Internal Market 
Committee of the European Parliament voted in favour of an opinion 
to appeal to the Court of Justice against the "Solana/NATO 
Decision" of 26 July which re-wrote the code on public access. The 
EP initiative was passed by 13 votes to 10 with the Socialist Group 
(PSE) voting against.
