ANEM press release

Attack on Studio B transmitter

BELGRADE, March 6, 2000 - The Association of Independent Electronic Media
protests in the strongest terms at this morning's violent theft of
equipment from Studio B Television and Radio B2 92 transmission equipment
from the Torlak in Belgrade. Two security guards at the transmitter were
violently assaulted by five men in police uniforms.

The uniformed men arrived at the site in a police jeep at about 3.00 am
today and approached the containers which house transmission equipment for
several Belgrade radio and television stations. The men asked the security
guards to use a telephone inside the container and, after being allowed to
enter, assaulted the two guards and stole essential items of transmission
equipment. Both guards suffered head injuries from being struck with guns
and were treated at the Belgrade Emergency Centre. The container also
housed transmission equipment belonging to Belgrade's BK Television, but
none of this was stolen.

ANEM demands that the appropriate state agencies find those who committed
this crime and punish them to the full extent of the law. Even if the
police jeep and uniforms were stolen, the greatest responsibility for this
crime lies with the state officials who have created a lynch-mob
atmosphere in which anything goes in their struggle against the objective
news coverage provided by the independent media.

ANEM warns that if these criminals are not brought to justice immediately,
Serbia will be embarking on a period of blatant terrorism, in which the
threats of Deputy Serbian Prime Minister Vojislav Seselj will be carried
out. ANEM also regards the responsibility for such escalation of
repression would lie with the state bodies whose actions, inactions and
statements have created this atmosphere of latent civil war in Serbia.

ANEM will do all in its power to ensure that broadcasts of Radio B292 will
be resumed from Torlak as soon as possible.
