V2_/DEAF03: Website & on-lineparticipation

The website is an up-to-date and ‘live’ reflection of the various
activities that take place at the festival and also a dynamic meeting place
for those who are unable to attend ‘DEAF03’ in the flesh but want to be
kept informed about all sorts of projects, events and debates. On-line
visitors can watch live streams and take part in the activities in a number
of ways. During the festival an archive will be built of audio and video
recordings and of editorial contributions by a large team of editors.
According to the festival's theme, these contents will be disseminated in
different ways via the website sections, for example the EDITORIAL and
KNITTING DEAF sections. The ARCHIVE section at the site visualizes 20 years
of electronic art within V2_, showing video and images of interactive
installations since the eighties and impressions of the former DEAFs. The
website was produced in collaboration with the artist Michiel Knaven (NL).

Online Participation

In the LIVE area online visitors can experience the festival by viewing
live streams, listening to radio (programmed by Worm.station) and
participating at events in numerous ways during the festival: Visitors will
experience the presence of physical and online visitors through visual
representation and live interaction. They can participate in events through
chat sessions and discussions in forums. Twelve hours a day, images and
impressions of activities, such as the ‘Information is Alive’ symposium,
the ‘Copy the Rights!’ seminar, the ‘Media Academy Day’ conference and the
‘Evenings of …’ will be streamed as live recordings and ‘after show’
reports. When more activities take place at the same time, different
channels will appear on the site to allow viewers to watch more than one
stream. During the following days, reruns of the live streams will be shown
several times. Also, pictures of the exhibition in Pakhuis Las Palmas will
appear regurlarly at the site. The online visitor will thus get a
comprehensive impression and overview into DEAF03's atmosphere and activities!

The following programs will be open for online participation via chat
sessions, on IRCnet at <irc.v2.nl>:

- The Evening of …
Wednesday 26 - Friday 28 February, 20:00 - 23:00 hours

called ‘Habituation Cage’, situated on the rooftop of the exhibition
building. Here they will enter into a dialogue with each other and discuss
all kinds of subjects that are related to the festival’s theme, such as
‘the body as a collection of data’. These discussions will be streamed via
the Internet and can also be watched on a projection screen in the

In the exhibition in Pakhuis Las Palmas:

‘H.I.D.E’. - Automat (A). <see KNITTING DEAF section at the site>
The ‘DEAF03’ website has a physical extension in the festival in the form
of an installation at the entrance of Las Palmas, the exhibition-space. The
installation ‘H.I.D.E.’ is handled in part by Automat. Visitors to the
installation are photographed and their transformed visual representations
are then integrated into the website.

‘Pockets Full of Memories’ - George Legrady (H/CDN/USA)
<www.pocketsfullofmemories.com>
Upon entering the exhibition visitors can scan and describe a personal
object they carry with them. Both the object and the description are added
to a dynamic database that is visualized as a large screen projection. The
archive also grows via the website where on-line visitors can establish
unexpected associations between descriptions and objects in the database.
