[Nettime-bold] Re: <nettime> murder |
Thanks for all the replies regarding the provenance of the page I sent. I'll paste the various links on the page. The "event" went on for at least a half hour by all reports. http://www.left-turn.org/feature/archive/execution.html http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/middle_east/newsid_1867000/1867726.stm The following is from the person who sent me the document, and who is in the process of back-tracking it. Dear Phil, It's taken me a couple of hours, mainly due to the fact that the name of the murdered kid is spelt incorrectly on the word document. The pictures, it turns out, originate from 11 March edition of Al-Hayat al-Jadida, and detail an event that took place on Friday 8 March 2002, in Beit Hanina, Jerusalem. The BBC got their info from the APF agency (see http://news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/world/middle_east/newsid_1867000/1867726.st m). There is more extensive English coverage at http://www.left-turn.org/ (March 12) which helpfully prints the Al-Hayat Al-Jadeda article, together with reports from the Israeli police, a French press agency, and an article in the Jerusalem Post. Given this coverage, it might be better to direct people to this site, though I don't know anything about Left Turn, and am loathe to make unnecessary links without knowing their agenda (In other words: I rather the images were associated with the Palestinian people rather than a group of pamphleteers calling for World Revolution Now!) Unfortunately, the server on this computer has just broken down, so I can't look into this any more extensively. I am still struck, as I think you were, by the immediacy and the urgency of the document I was originally sent, and of course they are precisely not the sort of images that are readily available in our media, even after Ramallah et al. From what I can gather, the 'controversy' revolves around whether Salah had explosives or not. The extra pictures of the Left Turn site reveal a robotic device, which our document of course omits, and the BBC site (of course!) includes ...The veracity of this story is of course only half the story, and the image of this murder stands, in parvo, for the shocking imbalance of power that is a physical reality in Israel and Palestine ...the sheer brute force of the military, the military hardware (a robot, for fuck's sake), and the pathetic humiliation of a kid in Y fronts with his brains on the tarmac.... As I said, I can't access any other websites at present, so this might have to wait 'til next week. If you've got any ideas you can reach me at the hotmail address over the weekend. ......................................................................................................
