Emerson College seeks a bold and creative leader for the positionÂofÂDeanÂofÂtheÂSchoolofÂCommunication.

Reporting to Chief Academic Officer, Michaele Whelan, the Dean will have the opportunity to provide strategic leadership and vision for a historic and innovativeSchoolÂofÂCommunicationÂwithin a College that is distinguished by its entrepreneurial culture and dedicated to developing future leaders in the fieldsÂofÂcommunicationÂand the arts.

Emerson College â located in the heartÂofÂBoston and enrolling approximately 3,760 full-time undergraduate students and 750 full- and part-time graduate students â is the nationâs premiere institutionÂofÂhigher education devoted toÂcommunicationÂand the arts, grounded in the liberal arts.

Emerson is internationally recognized in its fieldsÂofÂspecialization, which includecommunicationÂstudies; marketingÂcommunication; journalism;ÂcommunicationÂsciences and disorders; visual and media arts; the performing arts; and writing, literature and publishing. Emersonâs educational mission is informed by core liberal arts values that emphasize academic excellence, civic engagement, and the capacity for ethical thought and action; these values inspire students to create andÂcommunicateÂwith clarity, integrity, and conviction. In addition to the primary campus in Boston, Emerson has two additional campuses, one in Los Angeles and another in Well, the Netherlands. TheSchoolÂofÂCommunicationÂis home to approximately 1,080 undergraduate students and 360 graduate students. The Dean serves as the academic leader and manages approximately 60 fulltimeÂfacultyÂand 79 affiliatedÂfacultyÂmembers within theÂSchoolâs four departments:ÂCommunicationÂSciences and Disorders;ÂCommunicationÂStudies; Journalism; and MarketingÂCommunication. The Robbins Speech, Language, and Hearing Center is also housed within theÂSchool.

TheÂSchoolâs total operating budget is about $800,000 and includes budgets for the four departments and the Robbins Clinic. The Dean works with the chairs and clinic director to administer these budgets. TheÂSchoolÂhas eight staff members and 11 clinicalÂfaculty. Two staff report directly to the Dean, the technology director and an administrative associate that supports the Deanâs Office. The Dean also works with the BoardsÂofTrustees and Overseers and attends those meetings, as well as attending the Deansâ Council meetings and serving as partÂofÂthe Academic Cabinet. The successful Dean will be an innovative, energetic, and collaborative leader who is eager to connect with Emersonâs diverse, passionate, talented, and drivenÂfacultyÂand students. The successful candidate will have a terminal degree, and an earned doctorate is preferred. That candidate will also have a distinguished recordÂofÂintellectual and professional contribution to the field and/or practiceÂofÂcommunication, as well as teaching and service that will qualify for appointment as a tenured memberÂofÂaÂdepartmentÂin theSchoolÂofÂCommunication, and there is a strong preference for a candidate who is tenurable as a full professor.
